More and more young people in Kenya are finding work online (remote jobs), a shift that is changing lives and contributing to the growth of the digital economy.

Improved internet connectivity, digital skills training, and several government initiatives have made it easier for thousands of youths to earn a living remotely. For many, online jobs are no longer just a side hustle but a dependable career option.

Government programs such as Ajira Digital, the Presidential Digital Talent Program (PDTP), and the Whitebox Initiative have played a key role by opening up opportunities for online work, internships, and innovation.

The launch of digital hubs and the installation of more than 1,563 public Wi-Fi hotspots—in places like Kenyatta Market, Githurai, Sikhendu, Kiminini, Diani, Masii, and Wakulima—have also helped expand access.

Additionally, the Jitume Digital Hubs established across all the regions aim to open digital job opportunities to the youth in all counties.

Private sector players are part of the story too. Partnerships with providers like Starlink and projects such as Karibu Connect’s community Wi-Fi have brought connectivity to traders, students, and communities that were previously left out.

At the same time, freelance platforms and the rising demand for digital skills are opening new doors for young Kenyans.

Remote work offers flexibility, the freedom to work from any location, savings on transport costs, and more control over how time is managed. For many, it has also meant finding a healthier balance between work and personal life.

Here are some online platforms that Kenyan Youth can find remote jobs.

Popular Platforms for Remote Jobs

Upwork

Upwork is one of the largest freelancing platforms, connecting clients with independent professionals from around the world.

Whether you’re an accountant, developer, writer, designer, or customer service specialist, there are plenty of opportunities.

Freelancers can create detailed profiles, upload an introduction video, and either apply to job posts directly or be discovered by clients.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is among the most reputable platforms for career development. Users can build profiles that highlight their education, work experience, and skills.

Many companies post freelance and remote job openings, and job seekers can set up alerts using keywords like “freelance” or “remote” to access tailored opportunities.

Fiverr

Fiverr offers an easy way for digital freelancers to connect with clients. Instead of bidding for jobs, freelancers create profiles listing their services—known as “gigs.”

Clients can browse and purchase these services directly. Categories range from content creation and video production to app design and more.

AngelList Talent

AngelList Talent focuses on opportunities within startups. Freelancers can apply to thousands of growing companies with a single application or create a profile to attract interest.

Working with startups often provides a chance to make a bigger impact than in larger, established firms.

PeoplePerHour

PeoplePerHour connects businesses with freelancers across various industries, including programming, design, business, and legal services.

After creating a profile (which must be approved by the site), freelancers join a pool searchable by recruiters. At the same time, they can browse for projects that fit their expertise.

We Work Remotely

We Work Remotely is one of the largest marketplaces for remote jobs, drawing more than 3 million users monthly.

It lists positions in design, programming, and management, including postings from top companies like Google and Amazon. Unlike other sites, applicants don’t need to create a profile to apply.

With its focus on reliability, users don’t have to worry about scams or misleading ads.
