Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has threatened to file a defamation lawsuit against politician Mohamed Alinur.
In a statement on Monday, June 16, 2025, Alinur shared a demand letter from Sakaja’s legal team after his social media post made in connection with recent protests over the death of social media influencer Albert Ojwang in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
“Sakaja has sued me for defamation over a screenshot,” part of his statement read.
“I will gladly keep him busy in court with my lawyers.”
According to Walimo and Njoroge Advocates, the law firm representing Governor Sakaja, Alinur is accused of willfully and maliciously publishing—on or about June 13, 2025, at 10:28 PM—a defamatory and falsified post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account.
Mohamed Alinur Sued by Sakaja
The post featured a screenshot of a WhatsApp group chat titled “Nairobi County Inner C…”, in which Sakaja was falsely depicted as a participant under the name “Gov. Sakaja.”
“On or about 13th June 2025 at 10:28 PM, you willfully and maliciously published or caused to be published on your verified X (formerly Twitter) account a defamatory and falsified post purporting to depict a WhatsApp group chat (‘Nairobi County Inner C…’) in which our client is falsely presented as a participant under the name ‘Gov. Sakaja 0721326070,” the firm stated in its letter.

Sakaja’s lawyers further claimed that the screenshot was accompanied by a defamatory caption that read:
“Nairobi Governor Sakaja saying his plans to send goons yesterday to discredit maandamano worked well as he had planned. He is the orchestrator of yesterday’s chaos,” the lawyers said.
According to the governor’s legal team, the post portrayed Sakaja as:
- A dishonest and unethical individual who orchestrates violence for personal or political gain;
- A manipulative leader who undermines democratic rights and public order;
- A person who unlawfully deploys criminal elements (“goons”) to disrupt peaceful protests;
- An instigator of public chaos and insecurity.
Sakaja’s legal representatives are therefore demanding that Alinur immediately remove the defamatory content and issue a public apology to the governor.
Protests Turn Chaotic in Nairobi CBD
The defamation lawsuit is related to protests that took place on June 12, 2025, in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) to demand justice for Albert Ojwang, a blogger and teacher who reportedly died in police custody.
The protests became violent when suspected goons infiltrated and started destroying property.
Initially peaceful, the protests escalated as two vehicles were set on fire along Aga Khan Walk and property was vandalized.

Police responded with tear gas and water cannons, and several businesses were forced to shut down to avoid looting.
Following the chaos, reports emerged alleging that Nairobi County officials orchestrated the disruptions.
One claim referenced a WhatsApp group chat discussing payment arrangements for the goons. However, Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria dismissed the allegations and labeled the screenshot fake, urging the public to ignore it.
