Building Athusi Bar Into a Household Name
Athusi Bar is one of Nairobi’s most popular entertainment and social venues, particularly among members of the Ukambani community living in the capital, and a spot for many who arrive in the city.
The bar was founded in 1952 to serve as a cultural hub in Nairobi’s downtown area and has historically been managed by the Munyao family.
Kiembeni is recognized as one of the prominent founding partners who helped establish and manage the business for decades.
The name “Athusi” is a Kamba name that means “warriors who set out in search of livelihoods” and was chosen by the founders to resonate with the young Kamba men and women coming to Nairobi to seek fortune.
Since its establishment in 1952, the business asset has traditionally remained under the stewardship of elder community leaders and managers, such as Wistone Munyao.
The pub has also retained its vintage design, providing a comforting sense of antiquity and a rural village atmosphere.

The pub is housed within a classic, decades-old, low-rise concrete building that has deliberately eschewed modern skyscraper remodeling.
Its design resembles the “old-fashioned” pub style, featuring vintage woodwork, layout configurations, and a traditional seating arrangement that hasn’t changed since.
