Motorists have been advised to exercise caution following the partial closure of a section of Mombasa Road in Cabanas, Nairobi, to allow ongoing infrastructure works.
In a traffic advisory issued on June 28, the affected section is along Mombasa Road near a busy interchange in the Cabanas–Panari area, where construction of a pedestrian bridge is currently underway.
“Tolbert SSP Traffic Advisory | Mombasa Road (A8), Cabanas Interchange, Nairobi County. Traffic Diversion at Cabanas as Bridge Construction Continues,” the advisory read in part.
Traffic Advisory For Motorists After Cabanas, Mombasa Road Closure
Traffic authorities have implemented diversions to reroute vehicles around the Cabanas Interchange construction zone, causing delays during peak hours.
Drivers heading towards Nairobi Central Business District have been particularly affected as traffic flow is slowed by the ongoing works.
“Motorists are advised that sections of Mombasa Road at the Cabanas Interchange towards Nairobi CBD have been temporarily closed to facilitate the ongoing construction of the pedestrian bridge near the Panari,” the advisory read.
Public transport operators and private motorists have been urged to plan their journeys in advance and allocate extra travel time when using the corridor.

Traffic police and road marshals have been deployed to manage movement and guide motorists through the alternative routes.
Road signage has been installed around the construction area to help direct vehicles and reduce congestion-related risks.
Authorities have appealed to motorists to follow instructions and remain patient as the construction work continues to improve long-term traffic flow along the highway.
“Plan your journey in advance and allow extra travel time if using Mombasa Road through the Cabanas area. Follow temporary traffic signage and directions issued by traffic police and road marshals. For the Cabanas Interchange near Panari, the usual alternatives are to divert earlier and use service roads or nearby parallel routes on Mombasa Road rather than trying to cross right at the interchange.
If you are coming from Waiyaki Way/A8 toward Mai Mahiu, a common detour is to take Old Naivasha Road after Rubis Tills; if you are coming from the Mai Mahiu side toward Nairobi, you can rejoin via the local alternative roads around the interchange area.
For pedestrians near Panari, the practical option is to use the nearest footbridge or cross only where traffic control allows, since the corridor is busy and footbridge use is the safer choice.
