At least 11 Kenyans were reportedly killed in Russia on Christmas Day, according to journalist and digital creator Peter Njega.
In a social media post shared on January 24, Peter Njega shared a message from a Kenyan soldier on the battlefield, describing the brutal conditions and deaths in Russia.
A wounded Kenyan fighter, currently hospitalized in Moscow, described the situation on the ground as “extremely traumatizing”, with daily deaths among both Kenyans and Russians.
The fighter, who sustained serious injuries, recounted enduring brutal combat and advanced drone attacks from Ukrainian forces.
“People are dying here every single day, and it’s heartbreaking. Many Kenyans who came here did not survive. The situation is extremely traumatizing. At one point, I had to cover myself with dead bodies for almost two days without moving just to stay alive. That is the reality on the ground,” read part of the message.
In the message, the wounded soldier described the combat conditions, saying they were fighting with guns, while Ukrainian forces defended themselves using advanced drone technology.
He warned that anyone coming here expecting a normal job is being misled, noting that most recruits were brought in by agents who promised easy work, but the reality on the ground is very different.

Russia Recruits Kenyans to Fight the War
In September, the Kenyan police said they rescued 22 people from an alleged human trafficking ring that was secretly funneling citizens to Russia to be deployed in the war against Ukraine.
The operation followed an intelligence-led raid on a residential apartment in the Athi River area on the outskirts of Nairobi.
One suspect accused of coordinating the recruitment was arrested and brought to court, where he was ordered detained for 19 days as police pursue further investigations.

According to detectives, the victims revealed they had signed contracts with an unnamed overseas employment agency and were promised jobs in Russia.
Additionally, a Kenyan citizen was detained by Ukrainian forces after being captured while fighting for the Russian military near Vovchansk in Kharkiv Oblast.
According to Ukraine’s 57th Motorized Infantry Brigade, which released a statement on September 17, the man, who identified himself only as Evans, was previously an athlete who had traveled to Russia as a tourist.
