Rights Group Calls for Investigation Into Police Conduct During Azimio Demos

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) chairperson Roseline Odede has called for an immediate investigation into the conduct of police officers and protesters during the Monday, March 20 demos.

In a statement issued on Monday, Odede said the demos led to, “arrests, destruction of property, injuries and allegations of use of live bullets by the security agents.”

The KNCHR chairperson stated that the rights group is working with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to bring to book officers found guilty of using extreme force or going against the book while maintaining law and order during the demos.

“If proven, it would be very unfortunate and the same can be prosecuted under the command responsibility principle,” part of the statement by KNCHR read in part.

While calling on Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to also look into the conduct of police officers during yesterday’s demos, Odede said police officers should adhere to the checklist on public order management during protests and assemblies.

“The standards are very clear and must therefore be followed to the spirit and letter as enshrined in the Kenya Constitution and Police Service Standing Orders,” Odede said.

In a separate incident, a third-year student from Maseno University lost his life after he joined fellow students in the nationwide mass protests called by Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition leadership.

Police say the student of the literature identified as William Manaynge was killed when officers tried to disperse violent protesters who had invaded a supermarket in Maseno.

Condemning the killing of the student, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o called for a speedy investigation into the matter while calling for the immediate arrest of the police officer who fired the fatal bullet.

“It is unfortunate that instead of using tear gas or rubber bullets, the police chose to fire live ammunition at the students. The police should exhibit professionalism and restraint while quelling riots instead of using brutality on unarmed protesters,” he said.
