Russia launched a missile attack on a Ukrainian railway station on October 4, striking a passenger train.
The Russian drone strike on a railway station in Shostka, located in Ukraine’s northern Sumy region, left dozens injured after hitting a passenger train bound for Kyiv, Ukrainian officials reported on Saturday.
Russia Targets Civilian Infrastructure
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the strike, describing it as a deliberate attack on civilians.
In a post on Telegram, he called it a “brutal Russian drone strike on the railway station in Shostka.”
Zelenskiy shared footage showing a burning passenger carriage and others with windows blown out by the blast.
He said dozens of passengers and rail workers were wounded, calling the incident another example of the continued targeting of civilian areas by Russia.
“The Russians could not have been unaware that they were targeting civilians. This is terrorism, which the world has no right to ignore,” Zelenskiy stated.
Dozens Injured, No Deaths Reported
Officials confirmed that the drone hit a train operating on the Shostka–Kyiv route.
Regional governor Oleh Hryhorov said emergency teams, including medics and rescuers, were quickly deployed to the scene to assist the victims and manage the aftermath.
Oksana Tarasiuk, head of the Shostka District Military Administration, told Ukraine’s public broadcaster that about 30 people were injured because of the strike.

While many sustained serious injuries, no fatalities were immediately reported.
“Dozens of passengers and rail workers were wounded,” Zelenskiy reiterated, adding that rescue efforts were ongoing.
Authorities are still working to determine the extent of the destruction, with investigations underway to assess the full impact on the railway infrastructure and nearby civilian facilities.
Escalation of Attacks on Rail Infrastructure
The strike comes amid a surge in attacks from Russia on Ukraine’s transport infrastructure, which has seen daily bombardments over the past two months, according to Ukrainian officials.

Zelensky accused Moscow of intentionally targeting civilians to instil fear and disrupt transport links crucial to Ukraine’s mobility and economy.
“This deliberate targeting of civilians violates international law and cannot be justified,” Tarasiuk said.
The Shostka attack marks yet another incident in the Russia’s ongoing aerial campaign against northern Ukraine, adding to the growing toll of injuries and damage to non-military infrastructure.
As emergency responders continue their work, the international community has been urged to condemn Moscow’s escalating use of drone strikes that repeatedly hit civilian zones across the war-torn country.
