The Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG) Party Leader and Ugenya lawmaker David Ochieng’ has unveiled a new strategy in preparation for the 2027 general election.
In a statement on June 13, Ochieng said the party has embarked on an aggressive countrywide membership recruitment drive in preparation for the next polls.
Ochieng explained that the exercise will kick off in western Kenya with delegates’ conventions in Siaya County on Friday, June 14, and Kakamega on Monday, June 17.
“The party will conduct branch elections and carry out extensive recruitment in readiness for the election. We intend to build a formidable party that will form the next government,” Ochieng said.
The party leader explained that MDG plans to cover at least nine counties in the first phase of its mobilization program in the western region.
David Ochieng’ Makes History in Siaya
Ochieng made history by defeating ODM MP Chris Karan in the 2017 general elections. He beat Karan after a repeat poll held on April 5, 2019, occasioned by a successful petition he lodged in court.
Ochieng retained his position in 2022, garnering 25,520 votes to beat ODM’s Daniel Odhiambo, who got 22,828.
Ugenya is an ODM stronghold, being the home to party leader Raila Odinga, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Senator Oburu Oginga.
He resisted the push for ODM six-piece voting, which saw several non-ODM candidates lose their bids.

MDG Party Joins Kenya Kwanza
However, immediately after the general elections, Ochieng and the MDG party defected from the Azimio One Kenya Coalition led by Raila Odinga to President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Ochieng’ joined Kenya Kwanza alongside former Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma and former Kisumu Senator Fred Outa.
President Ruto signed a post-election coalition agreement with MDG on August 26, 2024.
Ochieng said Kenya Kwanza’s manifesto aligns with the party’s plans, adding that the decision came after consultations on moving the country forward.
“We are very happy to be here, and MDG is the part of the jigsaw puzzle that is missing in your matrix to govern the country, and it is going to be smooth now going forward,” he stated.

Ruto Welcomes MDG
On his part, Ruto said the government is ready to work with the MDG party and welcomed them to the Kenya Kwanza alliance.
Ruto said the move by MDG shuns tribal politics since the party hails from the Nyanza region, perceived to be ODM’s backyard.
“Kenya Kwanza is delighted to welcome the Movement for Democracy and Growth to the alliance. We are committed to partnerships that help us build one Nation for the prosperity of all Kenyans,” Ruto said.
