A showdown is looming ahead of the planned X (Twitter) space by President William Ruto after the Gen Z gave out new terms of the X space engagement which is set to happen on Friday June 5, 2024.
In an interview on Citizen TV, activist Kasmuel Mc Oure who has been vocal in the anti-government protests stated that the government was supposed to meet the Gen Zs on their own terms not at its own convenience.
“If the government is calling us to an X space for issues that we have raised I think they’re getting this wrong it should meet us on our terms,” he said.
Additionally, he stated that the X space engagement would not make difference since the executive has not been listening to the other two arms of government.
“The executive cannot listen to legislators, the voices of our representatives saying the exact same things that we are saying on ground I do not see what being on an X-space would achieve,” stated Kasmuel.

He added that the government should also learn to sit in the discomfort of social sciences and address the matters being brought to them by common citizens.
Ruto Put in a Fix by Gen Z’s
While hailing the Gen z movement, the activists stated that the only thing they are pushing for is good governance, accountability, justice and equality.
In addition, they stated that the move by the president to reshuffle the cabinet was not enough as it will not inspire confidence among them and in the whole country.
Additionally, the announcement by President William Ruto to have an engagement with Gen z’s on X space was countered as they announced their plans to hold a parallel X space.

In a bid to boycott the engagement session, there were posters making rounds on X flagging the post as fake with indications that the president was not to host the Gen Z’s.
A user by the name Quraish Abdi Habashow commented that “Mr. President we are the ones who are supposed to host you and you join as guest and not you inviting us. We will boycott,”.
Another user by the name Nguyo termed Ruto’s invite as a selfish one based on the time and day.
“Tone deaf again .2pm to 5pm on a Friday, a workday. Students in classes, employees etc. Disenfranchising a huge number. Building bridges on your own terms,” lamented Nguyo.
Other users dismissed the engagement session citing it as a formality to show that indeed the government cares.

Additionally, former Cherangany legislator Kipruto Kirwa termed the Ruto’s move as an ill-advised move and urged him to step back and let organs of the government face it fast.
“The president should refrain from being in the forefront of every fire. The meeting with Gen Z is ill advised. It is a big mistake.
What he should have done is to see how the various organs of government should have interfaced with the young people and at the right time he comes in when he is called to do so,” advised Kirwa.
