President William Ruto has announced the allocation of Ksh10 million the develop a new university project in Nyamira County, aimed at expanding access to higher education in the region.
Speaking during the laying of the foundation stone at Ikonge Modern Market in Nyamira County, Ruto revealed that the allocation includes Ksh7 million for the initial establishment of the university’s infrastructure.
The funds are intended to support early construction and foundational development works.
An additional Ksh3 million has been set aside for the construction of student hostels to accommodate learners once the institution becomes operational.
“I am going to Kiabonyoru today. I have already sent a contractor. I am giving them Ksh7 million to start a university, and by December this year, the university will be ready. I have also given Ksh3 million to build hostels for the youth of that university,” Ruto said.
The president revealed that the contractor for the project has already been engaged to begin preliminary works, and the university development is expected to be completed within the set timeframe, indicating readiness by December this year.
Ruto Outlines Development Push for Kisii and Nyamira Counties
Speaking prior to the event, Ruto said the government is transforming the face of Gusiiland through the implementation of strategic projects across Kisii and Nyamira counties.
He noted that the program is being carried out in collaboration with local leaders to ensure no part of the region is left behind, stating that the key priorities include affordable housing, modern markets, student hostels, roads and bridges, stadia, and water projects, among other infrastructure developments.
According to him, these initiatives aim to unlock economic potential and uplift households from the bottom up.
Ruto further said the results of these investments are already visible in both counties, reflecting ongoing development progress across the region.

“Met Kisii and Nyamira leaders, led by Governors Simba Arati (Kisii) and Amos Nyaribo (Nyamira), MPs, and MCAs. We engaged grassroots leaders on the region’s development priorities, aligning our plans with the needs of the people,” Ruto stated.
Nyamira University College Development
President William Ruto announced its location in Kiabonyoru, North Mugirango Constituency, in August 2024, fulfilling a long-standing local demand for a public university institution in Nyamira County.
Nyamira University College is a developing public higher education institution in Nyamira County, operating as a constituent college of Kisii University, and it is designed to expand access to university education within the region and surrounding areas.
Groundbreaking for the project was held in August 2025 by the Principal Secretaries, officially marking the start of construction.

Later, Defense Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya launched the construction phase in November 2025.
As of April 2026, the main tuition block is nearing completion, with construction reportedly handled by the Ministry of Defense over an estimated 10-month period.
The University plans indicate that the first student intake will follow shortly after completion.
The first phase of development included a multipurpose academic block featuring 16 lecture halls and administrative offices.
Further, the plan details that future expansion will include 13 blocks covering student hostels, a medical center, catering facilities, sports amenities, and a guest house, aimed at transforming the area into a full education hub.
