The Government of Kenya has listed land parcels and registered owners whose land it will acquire for the mandatory Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) expansion project.

Dr. Abdillahi Saggaf Alawy, the chairman of the National Land Commission (NLC), issued the notification on behalf of the Kenya Railways Corporation in Gazette Notice No. 14579, dated September 10, 2026, under Section 110 of the Land Act (No. 6 of 2012).

“Notice is given that the National Land Commission intends to delete, correct and acquire parcels of land shown in the Schedule hereunder on behalf of Kenya Railways Corporation in accordance with Section 110 of the Land Act, No. 6 of 2012 and further to Gazette Notice Nos. 4986, 13765 and 14121 for Construction of Naivasha-Kisumu-Malaba Standard Gauge Railway,” part of the notice directed.

The compulsorily acquired, corrected, and deleted parcels include those in Kisumu/Chiga, Kisumu/Sidho West, and Kisumu Municipality Block 22 in Kisumu County [186–187, 206].

Further, the notice directed that interested persons inspect the plans of the affected land at the National Land Commission (NLC) offices at Ardhi House (3rd Floor, Room 305, 1st Ngong Avenue) in Nairobi, or at the County Co-ordinator’s Office in Kisumu County, during official working hours.

Additionally, the section has an additional 8.69-kilometer branch line to the proposed Kisumu Port.

In comparison, the Kisumu-Malaba section covers another 107 kilometers, extending the railway to the Ugandan border.

The corridor will pass through nine counties: Narok, Bomet, Nyamira, Kericho, Kisumu, Siaya, Vihiga, Kakamega, and Busia.

On March 19, President William Ruto launched the Naivasha-Kisumu section in Narok; on March 21, Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni launched the Kisumu-Malaba section in Kisumu. Construction of the railway began on July 1.
