St. Charles Lwanga Ichuni Girls High School is a public national girls’ boarding school in Kenya, known for its strong academic performance and for empowering women in the Gusii region.

In the new Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, St. Charles Lwanga Ichuni Girls High School, which officially transitioned to the senior school level in January 2026, is categorized as a Cluster 1 (C1), and it supports a Triple Pathway because of its extensive infrastructure as a national school and offers all three specialized career pathways.

Cluster 1 schools are those equipped to provide all three pathways.

The specialized pathways are,

STEM- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, with tracks including Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences, and Technical Studies.

Social Sciences – Humanities and Business Studies.

The school now serves as a Senior School, hosting students from Grade 10 to Grade 12.

St Charles Lwanga Ichuni History and Performance

The school was founded in 1960 by the Catholic Church Mission under Reverend Father Joseph Oucho and began as a day primary and intermediate school for girls in an area where girls were often married off early. To address this issue, Father Oucho established a boarding institution in 1965.

In the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, 72% of the 598 candidates earned direct university entry, marking a historic academic milestone.

It was one of the only schools in Kenya with over 800 candidates in a single year.

In the 2025 KCSE examinations that were released on January 9, 2026, St. Charles Lwanga Ichuni Girls High School continued its strong academic standing, following the historic 2024 performance.

While specific 2025 grade distributions for the school were not finalized in the immediate post-release reports, the school’s trajectory is built on its 2024 success.
