St George’s Girls Secondary School is a national public secondary school categorised as C1 under the new Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum. The school was established in 1986 as a mixed-day secondary school.
In its early years, St George’s served both boys and girls before undergoing a significant transition that shaped its present identity. The school later converted into a girls-only boarding institution following the relocation of male students to Nairobi Milimani Secondary School.
Although the secondary school was founded in 1986, its roots are closely linked to St George’s Primary School, established in 1952 by the wife of the British Governor in Kenya.
St George’s history
From the late 1990s through the 2010s, St George’s Girls experienced steady growth in enrolment and facilities. Alumni records, including the Class of 1997, reflect the school’s growing presence during this period.
By the early 2000s, students recall an active school life characterised by structured religious activities and access to facilities such as a swimming pool.

In 2016, the school undertook major infrastructure expansion with the completion and occupation of a new dormitory designed specifically for Form Four students. Two years later, in 2018, the school expanded further following the government’s 100 per cent transition policy from primary to secondary education. This led to the admission of two additional Form One day-stream classes, while the boarding section maintained six Form One classes.
In the 2020s, the school strengthened its role in promoting educational equity. St George’s Girls became a host institution for UNICEF-supported initiatives and Government Affirmative Action programmes that support learners from historically marginalised regions.
The school also established the Girl Child Trust Fund, which currently supports more than 100 vulnerable learners by providing essential supplies and educational support.
Enrolment and performance
By 2025, student enrolment had grown to over 1,500 learners. The school in September 2025 experienced a brief period of unrest that led to a temporary closure following protests linked to discipline practices.
In line with national education reforms, St George’s Girls is among senior secondary schools affected by the full rollout of the CBE curriculum. The school is scheduled to admit its first cohort of Grade 10 students in January 2026.

St George’s Girls has maintained consistent performance in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) over the years. The school recorded an improvement in the 2024 KCSE mean score, rising from 6.8 in 2023 to 6.95.
School fees
The government previously issued a directive outlining the maximum annual school fees that parents should pay.
Under new CBE guidelines for senior secondary schools introduced in 2025 by the Ministry of Education, Kenya’s national schools were grouped into four clusters.
St George’s was placed in Cluster One (C1), meaning the official annual fee cap for students is Ksh53,554.
However, actual fees may vary slightly from school to school due to additional charges levied by individual institutions—such as for uniforms, motivation programs, or co-curricular activities.
