Kericho aspiring politician Cheptoo Shaz Langat has drawn attention after volunteering to dive into the Cheptingting Quarry to help retrieve an unidentified body.
In a post she shared on September 22, Shaz, who is aspiring for the Kericho Women Representative seat, said she volunteered to descend into Cheptingting Quarry, Kericho, and participate in the recovery operation.
“Today, with the help of Laban, I volunteered to bravely descend into the Cheptingting Quarry and successfully participated in the retrieval of an unidentified body discovered at the site,” she said.
Who is Cheptoo
From her publicly available profile details, Cheptoo Shaz is from Kericho and lists her date of birth as June 10, 1997.
Her work history shows an account officer role at the Kenya Revenue Authority, as well as work as a self-employed Human Resources Consultant.
She has listed her Human Resources Consultant role as running from February 15, 2024, to the present.
Cheptoo Shaz also lists Holy Family Catholic Church Kiembeni, where she has worked as a Sign Language Interpreter since February 15, 2024.
Her education details show that she studied for an MBA at Kenyatta University, Mombasa Campus.
Among her listed hobbies is swimming.
Cheptoo Shaz Langat Joins Body Recovery Operation
Cheptoo Shaz said she took part in the operation with the help of a person identified as Laban, after an unidentified body was discovered at the site.
She described the task as difficult and challenging but said the body was successfully retrieved through courage, teamwork, compassion and determination.
According to Cheptoo Shaz, they handed over the body for the necessary procedures after the recovery.

She said the incident showed the importance of stepping forward to serve communities and support people during times of tragedy.
“In times of tragedy, we must be willing to step forward, serve our communities, and support those in need,” Shaz said in her post.
She added that service to humanity comes before everything else.
Cheptoo Shaz also thanked leaders who were present during the operation and helped where necessary.
Mixed Reactions to Cheptoo Shaz’s River Recovery Effort
The incident has attracted mixed reactions on social media, with some users questioning the circumstances surrounding the recovery while others praised Shaz for joining the operation.
Joan Masika questioned whether the move could be linked to the approaching political season, writing that “politicians can do anything to win your votes.”
She also commented on the diving operation and the diver’s ability to remain underwater.

Scandy Chemutai Rogony, however, praised Shaz’s actions, saying she had braved the waters to help retrieve the body.
Rogony said Shaz’s actions challenged the perception that some tasks are better suited to men, arguing that courage is not determined by gender.
She also noted that Shaz entered the water without proper gear and described the act as an act of bravery, compassion, and humanity.
Rogony further mentioned Laban Kiplangat and Sharon Cheptoo, whom she identified as the two divers, and wished them protection.
