Grief has engulfed a Kenyan family following the death of 26-year-old Ashley Atieno Odhiambo in Indonesia on August 3, 2026.
In a message to a local diaspora media outlet, Ashley’s brother, Ismail Okwero, said she had traveled to Indonesia for work but became ill for a short period before she died.
“Ashley went to Indonesia to work, but unfortunately she felt sick for a very short period of time and passed away,” the brother explained.
In his message, Ismail said the family was seeking help to repatriate Ashley Atieno’s remains back to her motherland, Kenya.
He said he had visited various government offices and sought assistance from senior government officials but had not received the help needed.
Ismail appealed to the public to help publicize the family’s situation so they could receive assistance in bringing Ashley Atieno’s remains home.
Family Raises KSh500,000 as Ashley Atieno’s Body Remains in Indonesia
According to Ismail, the Indonesian Embassy instructed the family to raise KSh860,000 to facilitate the repatriation of Ashley Atieno’s remains to Kenya.
The family has raised KSh500,000 so far and is seeking help to raise the remaining KSh360,000.
Ismail said the family wants to bring Ashley’s body home for burial in Asembo, Rarieda, Siaya County.
“The Indonesian Embassy instructed us to raise Ksh 860,000 so as to facilitate the repatriation process. As the family, we have managed to raise Ksh 500,000, and we need help so that we can take our sister’s body home to Asembo Rarieda, Siaya County, for burial,” he said.

In a death certificate he shared from the Bhayangkara TK. I Pusdokkes Polri Hospital in Jakarta identifies the deceased as Odhiambo Ashley Atieno, recording her date of death as August 3, 2026, and lists the place of death as Apartmen Cinere Resort Tambora.
The certificate indicates that an external examination was conducted on August 3, 2026, and that no autopsy was performed.

Virginia Gacheri’s family says she endured severe mistreatment while working in Qatar before her death, including alleged acid exposure to her hands and being denied adequate food.
Her parents and siblings say Gacheri fled a household where she worked after allegedly experiencing torture and threats to her life. Her mother recalls Gacheri saying she sometimes survived on leftovers from household members’ plates because she was allegedly not allowed to eat the food in the house.

According to her parents, Gacheri moved to Qatar in 2022 and supported her family in Kiamuriuki, Chuka.

On September 4, the family received news that Gacheri had collapsed and died shortly after leaving a washroom at a facility where she and other women were staying while looking for employment.
Gacheri leaves behind children, including a son studying at Meru National Polytechnic and a daughter in Grade Four.
The family is now appealing for assistance to raise about Sh1 million required to repatriate Gacheri’s body and meet burial expenses.
