Tensions between the governments of Kenya and Sudan have continued to escalate after Rapid Support Forces (RSF) meetings hosted in Nairobi.
RSF went on to sign a “political agreement” charter with its affiliates to establish a “governmental authority” in the areas controlled by the para-military group.
Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, February 26, welcomed a statement by the spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the United Nations stating that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his deep concern over the signing of the charter.
The Sudanese government maintained that there is no justification for Kenya’s actions to host the RSF group.
In the statement, Sudan’s MFA condemned President William Ruto’s embracing of the RSF and called on the international and regional community to reject the “dangerous behaviour of the Kenyan leadership.”
“The Ministry reiterates its call to international and regional organizations, as well as to all nations, to reject the said dangerous course of action followed by the Kenyan presidency, which not only jeopardizes regional peace and security but also constitutes a blatant violation of Sudan’s sovereignty,” read part of the statement.
The Ministry issued the call after Secretary Guterres warned that this escalation threatens to deepen the crisis and threatens to divide the country.
UN speaks on Sudan crisis
The UN Secretary General stressed that preserving the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sudan remains the key to a permanent solution to the crisis and achieving long-term stability in the country and the region.

He further condemned ongoing violence against civilians by both warring sides, including ethnically motivated attacks.
“The Secretary-General is deeply concerned at the announcement by the Rapid Support Forces and affiliated civilian actors and armed groups of a political charter that expresses an intention to establish a governing authority in Rapid Support Forces areas of control,” read a statement by spokesperson’s office.
“Sudanese women, children and men are paying the heaviest price for the continued military offensives by the belligerents.”
The Sudanese Ministry equally commended the position expressed by the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States towards disapproving of any measures that could undermine Sudan’s unity or expose it to division or fragmentation under any pretext or designation.
“Also worthy of praise are the strong and consistent support expressed by several brotherly nations, including the Arab Republic of Egypt, the State of Qatar, and the Federal Republic of Somalia,” it added.
RSF and allied groups sign political charter in Kenya
On Saturday, the RSF and allied armed groups signed “a political charter” in Kenya to form a parallel government to the Sudanese authorities.

Among those who agreed to it was a faction of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, which controls parts of the South Kordofan and Blue Nile states in the country’s south.
RSF deputy commander and commander Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo’s brother Abdel Rahim Dagalo also signed.
The move came nearly two years into a devastating war with the regular army that has uprooted more than 12 million people and caused what the UN terms the world’s largest hunger and displacement crises.
The proposed government aims to end the war, ensure unhindered humanitarian aid and integrate armed groups into a single, national force.
