The Nairobi Traffic Police have announced road closures and heightened security measures ahead of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens at Nyayo Stadium, warning motorists of potential traffic disruptions during the two-day event.
Addressing the media, Silas Bundi, the Nairobi Traffic Police Commander, confirmed that Aerodrome Road will be closed to traffic for the duration of the tournament.
“For the two days of the event, we will close completely Aerodrome Road,” the police commander stated.
Additionally, Silas Bundi emphasised the need for motorists to plan their journeys accordingly.
Roads to Be Closed by Police Ahead of Rugby Sevens
According to the Nairobi Traffic Police Commander, Mombasa Road will be partially closed to allow the safe movement of participants and spectators.
Bundi urged Kenyans without business at Nyayo Stadium to use alternative routes to avoid traffic snarls.
“All vehicles moving from Mombasa Road intending to access the CBD, we would like to ask you to use alternative routes,” he added.
The police also stated that parking will not be available for attendees, whether participating in or watching the event.

“There will be no parking for those who will be participating and those who will be attending as spectators. Kenyans must arrange for parking before attending the event,” Bundi said.
Authorities said closures are necessary to maintain order and ensure the safety of all participants, officials, and spectators.
Motorists and the general public are advised to stay updated on road closures and adhere to traffic instructions issued by the Nairobi Traffic Police throughout the tournament.
Alternative Routes
Aerodrome Road is a key arterial route in Nairobi, running close to Nyayo National Stadium. The road extends from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout, serving as a vital link for traffic moving between Mombasa Road and the city’s central business district.

Drivers on Mombasa Road intending to access Nairobi’s central business district during road closures are advised to use the following alternatives:
- Likoni Road → Enterprise Road from Mombasa Road provides a diversion toward the CBD, helping drivers avoid the closed section of Aerodrome Road.
- Southern Bypass at Ole Sereni from Mombasa Road offers access around central Nairobi and reduces pressure on inner-city arteries.
- Vehicles approaching the city centre from Lang’ata Road can use Raila Odinga Road (formerly Mbagathi Way) and Muhoho Road via Mbagathi Roundabout.
- Other diversions include Limuru Road or Kiambu Road for traffic heading to the CBD or connecting to the Eastern Bypass Highway if approaching from Thika Road.
