Ugandan Journalist Simon Kaggwa Njala on Tuesday, September 10 launched a t-shirt, featuring the words “Why are you gay?”
The shirt features a photo of Kaggwa Njala, with the words “Why are you gay?” written across the front.
Kaggwa took on his official X account stating “Kabooooooom! You wanna rock in a Why are you gay T-shirt?”
“Officially endorsed by the OG Simon Kaggwa Njala. The only original “Why are you, Gay?’ Tee inexistence. All proceeds go to Uganda. Absaad, I know!”
Simon Kaggwa Njala, a prominent host of NBS Uganda’s Morning Breeze show, is known for his hard-hitting and direct interviews.
His work at NBS TV, part of the Next Media conglomerate, has made him a notable figure in Ugandan media.
The sensational journalist went viral for his interview with an LGBTQ activist confronting him about his status, amusing netizens with his rather direct interview in 2012.

Simon Kaggwa Rose to Fame
On December 18, 2012, an episode of NBS TV’s English-language morning show Morning Breeze aired a memorable debate on the topic of homosexuality.
The discussion featured transgender LGBTQ rights activist Pepe Julian Onziema, the show’s host Simon Kaggwa Njala, and Pastor Martin Ssempa.
During the interview, Njala aimed to address common questions about this sensitive issue, leading to the infamous moment when he asked Onziema, “Why are you gay?”
“We bring in the studio this morning one of the gay rights activists, mister – should I call you “mister”? (Sure) – Pepe Julian Onzima. Thank you for coming in, good morning. Why are you gay?” Njala posed to which Onziema responded,” Who says I’m gay?” Njala in a rejoinder said,” You are gay.”
Clips of the interview went viral on social media, causing many “why are you gay” memes and GIFs.
Controversies Surrounding the Ugandan Journalist
Njala also maintains a solid social media presence based on his controversial political opinions.
In many respects, he is seen in a similar light as Andrew Tate, a predictable factor in why the two men saw eye-to-eye during their interview on September 9, 2024.
Andrew Tate, a British-American former kickboxer turned social media personality, has gained international notoriety for his controversial views and legal troubles.
In June 2024, NBS TV suspended its star talk show host, Simon Njala Kaggwa, for 14 days a decision that sparked outrage, debate, and speculation among fans, colleagues, and political analysts.
Njala was suspended after posting a series of tweets that supported Mathias Mpuuga and criticized the NUP (National Unity Platform).
Mpuuga, the opposition leader in Uganda’s Parliament, had recently clashed with NUP, led by opposition figure Bobi Wine.
Insiders claimed that Kaggwa’s actions were deemed a grave breach of ethical standards, prompting a crisis meeting of the station’s top management.
Njala’s Education and Career
Simon Kaggwa moved to Kampala, Uganda’s capital, to further his education, where he obtained his UCE and UACE certificates for O-level and A-level before attending university.
Simon Kaggwa Njala began his journalism career in 2008 while still a student, writing for The Crusader, a print newspaper in Kampala.
He then joined Radio One and Akaboozi Ku Bbiri, where he hosted the popular show “Uganda Speaks” in 2011.
In 2012, Njala joined Next Media’s NBS TV, where he became the host of the Morning Breeze and the Eagle show. He has been with the television station for over a decade.
In 2016, Njala ventured into elective politics, running for Member of Parliament for Busiro South.
However, he was defeated by Peter Sematimba, who secured the seat for the Busiro Constituency.
In 2023, the interview was acknowledged by X platform’s Africa Facts Zone as Africa’s most popular interview.
