The US Embassy in Nairobi has issued an advisory to all US citizens in Kenya urging them to stay vigilant and avoid large gatherings ahead of opposition vigils.
In the alert dated July 25, the embassy referenced opposition leader Raila Odinga’s call for countrywide public vigils in lieu of the protests that were set to take place on Wednesday, July 26.
“Kenyan opposition leaders have called for solidarity parades and public vigils nationwide in lieu of a previously announced protest for July 26,” reads the statement in part.
The embassy noted that despite the opposition calling for a peaceful event, large gatherings sometimes turn violent.
Hence, they called on US Citizens in Kenyan to be aware of the circumstances and keep a safe distance.
“Organizers have stated that the events are intended to be peaceful. However, large public gatherings can turn violent at any moment. It is recommended to remain vigilant and aware of circumstances and avoid large gatherings,” the statement further reads.

Moreover, the embassy cautioned the foreigners to expect traffic disruptions as opposition leaders and their supporters hold parades across the country.

Likewise, the Embassy urged US citizens in Kenya to arm themselves with an evacuation plan that does not rely on US government including a Kenyan Visa just in case things go south.

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition on Monday, July 24 suspended anti-government protests that were to take place on Wednesday, July 26.
Azimio asked its supporters to hold vigils in honour of Kenyans maimed during the recent countrywide protests.
“Azimio has made the decision that on Wednesday, rather than go to the streets for a peaceful demonstration as earlier announced, we will hold solidarity parades and vigil for victims of police brutality in various locations in all parts of the country,” read part of Azimio statement.
