Brookhurst International Schools achieved some of the best O-Level and A-Level results in the schools’ history. The outstanding results do not stop there. We reveal the 6 key reasons that make studying at Brookhurst special.

Brookhurst International Schools holds a long-standing reputation as on the best institutions in delivering a complete and well-rounded education. The school prides itself as a diverse and progressive institution housing ambitious and inquisitive students. They encourage their students to be bold, to understand and positively challenge common conceptions. Brookhurst enrolls students between the ages of 5-18 years in the following categories early years, preparatory, secondary and sixth form. The school prides itself in giving its students a distinctive experience that students carry with them forever.

The school announced its O-Level and A-Level results to the adulation of parents, students and their extended family. So, The Kenya Times team caught up with Mrs. Catherine Baitoti, deputy principal, who was quick to point out that there is far more to a young student’s academic experience than exam results. Here, Catherine reveals the 6 key components that provide a unique and all-round experience at Brookhurst International Schools.

1. Academic Excellence

Brookhurst has a lot to boast about here. 2024 was simply put an outstanding year in academic O-level and A-level results. If you are a ‘stats nerd’ here are the key figures: 98% pass rate A*-C, 100% pass rate in key subjects like English, French, Music, Kiswahili, Literature, ICT and PE. The outstanding grades were coupled by their career department that assists students to transition to colleges and universities in the region or further abroad. The students in the class of 2024 already have admission to universities such as Catholic University of East Africa (Kenya), University of Central Lancashire (UK), University of Cairo (Egypt), Swinburne University (Malaysia)and University of Western Australia.

Mrs. Catherine says “Brookhurst is proud of this year’s academic results and the schools’ improving record. The addition of events such as career fairs and university talks and showcases have given our students the opportunity to chart the best course forward in their academic journey after Brookhurst. We are proud to currently have numerous alumni students all around the globe striving to achieve their dreams.”

2. A Home Away from Home

A key theme of the school is ‘We are Brookhurst. We are family.’ The school prides itself in offering its student a safe and serene learning environment with a culture based on love and support. There’s a high student retention rate as students move from early years to sixth form. The family-centric focus of the school tries to have students bond with each other across the age groups as it involves them in various on campus activities as well as in their schoolhouses. The family-oriented support stretches to the teaching staff who are always available for one on one and group consultative sessions.

Mrs. Catherine says “We cannot forget to emphasize the impact the family focused culture at Brookhurst has had on our academic results. I have taught and administered at numerous international schools, the culture at Brookhurst is just different. The support amongst students and faculty leads to a collaborative approach to learning and life at the school.”

3. Preparation For Life

A lot is done at Brookhurst to give its students a complete education. From the standard extra learning sessions, collaborative group engagements you find at other schools to their unique programmes that give students a more rounded learning experience. For example, the school recently announced that it has formed a partnership with globally renowned NCC education (UK). NCC Education was originally part of the National Computing Centre established as a computing initiative by the British Government in 1966. It is a fully accredited UK awarding body and a global provider of distinct British education in Business, Computing, and university access programmes. Qualifications in Computing and Business span from foundational to Master’s degree level, accommodating a wide array of academic interests. NCC education qualifications are internationally recognized and highly valued by employers and universities across continents.

Mrs. Catherine says: “Brookhurst is one of very few schools in the Kenya to offer a comprehensive skills programme – a course dedicated to teaching students the general skills they need to thrive in the workplace and a range of life skills, such as cookery, that prepares the students for life after school. These programmes are essential in aiding our academic pursuits.”

4. Co-Curricular Adventures

Brookhurst’s Co-curricular programme forms a key pillar in providing students the tools for success inside and outside the classroom. The school offers a wide array of activities for students to choose from. From music to theatrical arts and an outdoor education offered on the school’s numerous on campus sporting facilities. There are plenty of ways for students to try something new, extend their enthusiasm and develop lifelong interests. Aviation at the school has offered its young fledgling pilots an early start in pursuit of a career in the skies.

Catherine says: “Our facilities give students the chance to develop their interests however individual they may be. We have an amazing aquatics center, various basketball & tennis courts and a soon-to-be-completed school auditorium that will seat 350 people. The essential use of co-curricular activities avenues for creativity, expression and teamwork have ripped positive results in our classrooms.”

5. A Culture of Giving & Community

The school aims to nurture global citizens who leave a positive impact on the world. Brookhurst endeavors to have its students continue to be integral in activities that positively impact the wellbeing of the needy and the community around it. Brookhurst students are required to be part of various activities that add to the lives of others. We entrench this in each and every student. Recent activities include a provisions drive for children with cerebral palsy at the Joyful Hears Center.

Catherine says “A Brookhurst student must be noticeable from their deeds. We hold our students to a high standard and require them to always be positive changemakers at all times. We believe a student with this mentality at their core will give their all in the classroom as well.”

6. A Bedrock of Winning

Brookhurst has a concerted effort to have a bedrock of winning in the schools’ vibe. Once you walk into the school’s reception the numerous trophies will have you gazing at the winning culture at the school. The biggest wins are the school’s 2022 and 2024 wins overall at the World Scholars regional competitions. The school took on 300 schools in debates and academic challenges to emerge as the overall winner. Additional wins include the 2022 IPPSA U-15 girls’ basketball champions and the IPPSA U-17 boys’ football champions.

Catherine says: “Winning is a state of being where the student is focused and primed for success in everything they do. We have a high benchmark in everything we do. We must strive to have our students always making sure they ask for the best from themselves individually and as a group. We hope this is something that holds for many generations that come and go from Brookhurst International School.”
