The government has launched the mapping of industries and the subsequent development of an industrial database for the industries in Nairobi County.
A notice on Tuesday, May 6, shows that the exercise will be conducted by the State Department for Industry in collaboration with the State Department for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development and the State Department for Economic Planning, together with their agencies, Kenya Industrial Estates and Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.

The primary objective of this exercise is to develop a Comprehensive Database and Directory of industries.
The agencies stated that the information is essential for policy formulation, planning, and investment facilitation.

Trained Research Assistants will visit industrial establishments across all 147 Sub-locations in Nairobi County to collect relevant data.
The exercise will be conducted between May and June 2025.

The government has urged industry management to be receptive and cooperative in providing accurate data to facilitate the success of this important initiative.
“Data collection will be done in a professional and non-disruptive manner,” reads part of the notice.
Industrialisation Secretary (IS) Prof Erastus Gatebe, said the activity was crucial in supporting the government to plan and formulate policies and develop industry infrastructure.

Prof. Gatebe said that the activity was a clear indication of the government’s commitment in its efforts towards Kenya’s industrialization journey as envisioned in the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
“The primary objective of this exercise is to develop a comprehensive database and directory of industries, which is essential for policy formulation and investment facilitation,” Gatebe added.
He emphasized the need to develop a comprehensive database and directory to document the state of manufacturing in Kenya.

Director for Industries Explanation
On her part, Director for Industries and the Chairperson of the Mapping Project, Ann Kiarie, said mapping and geo-location are essential tools in the modern industrial landscape.
Kiarie said it enables accurate identification and location of industries, which is crucial for planning, development, and management.
She explained that the project is crucial because the outcome will inform policy actions and strategies that will assist the manufacturing sector in Kenya to upscale and realize its full potential.

“Manufacturing, albeit contributing 8% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has the potential to transform the fortunes of our country through job creation and production of goods and services,” she remarked.
