Citizen TV anchor Yvonne Okwara exposed Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura after he declined to show up for an interview, he had requested for on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.
During the 9PM bulletin, Yvonne started by clarifying she was to host the government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura to shed light on the state of the nation amid the ongoing anti-government protests.
“On this 2nd day of July, here on the explainer we had every intention of hosting the government’s spokesperson Isaac Mwaura.
Yvonne Okwara sets record straight
“This interview was at his request which came late this evening, we granted him an opportunity on the explainer tonight, but the spokesperson chooses not to be here to speak to the situation in the country,” Yvonne revealed.
Mwaura’s absence on the interview sparked reactions among netizens on Twitter (X) as others associated it with fear of being grilled and looking bad.
Amon Brian on X insinuated that the legislature grew cold feet after watching President William Ruto‘s round table at State House June 30, 2024.
During the interview, Linus Kaikai, Joe Ageyo and Eric Latiff cornered the head of state on various issues.

“Even if it were you could you have attended the interview? After the last interview with the president. I could see it in your eyes how you long to be in that team. Hehe the pressure increases. Keep the good work Yvonne,” commented Amon.
Another user by the name Dr Ephraim Ndumba expressed his joy that the spokesperson did not show up as Kenyans were tired of government lies and insensitive talk.
Other users insinuated that he was gagged by the president not to attend the interview.
“You failed the president this was a cover up and he denied you the chance to embarrass him again. At this rate he should fire you,” commented Hon Njuguna 2.
Earlier on, Isaac Mwaura had posted on his X account that he was to be on the show and asked netizens to tune in an engage with him on the segment dubbed ‘The Explainer’ hosted by Yvonne Okwara.
“Let’s engage today at 9:00 pm on Citizen TV concerning the protests,” stated Mwaura.
His post gained interest from members of the public as they urged him to prepare adequately for the interview.
“We shall be tuning in. Do research and present facts. Don’t embarrass the government. That’s what am expecting,” commented Samwel Wekesa on X.
Ezekiel Mutua Hails Press Freedom in the Country
Consequently, Chief Executive officer at the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) Ezekiel Mutua hailed the freedom of speech being experienced in Kenya following Ruto’s interview on Sunday.

Additionally, he added that only few countries in Africa would have journalists grill a head of state during an interview.
“There are few countries in Africa where journalists can say half the things that were said to President Ruto tonight.
There are few countries in Africa where you can push a President like that. Such levels of freedom should count for something as we engage. We must never take it for granted,” hailed Mutua.
