Sirisia Member of Parliament John Waluke has lost an appeal in which he sought to overturn a 57-year jail term slapped on him by a magistrate’s court
The High Court rejected Waluke’s appeal against a judgement that ordered him to pay Sh1 billion fine or serve 57 years in jail for fraud.
Waluke, who had appealed against a magistrate’s court ruling that slapped him with the heavy sentences, lost the appeal before the High Court on Thursday, October 6.
The jubilee MP was, in June 2020, found guilty of defrauding the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) Sh297 million.
High Court Judge Esther Maina said in her ruling on Thursday that the prosecution proved beyond any reasonable doubt that Waluke took part in the NCPB fraud.
Waluke successfully defended his seat in the August 9, 2022
The lawmaker who ran on Jubilee Party ticket, garnered 16,461 votes against his closest competitor Nasiuma Wafula who got 8,811 votes.
It is expected that MP will proceed to the Court of Appeal in a bid to overturn the High Court’s decision.
Should Waluke lose at the Court of Appeal, he will have an option of moving to the Supreme court as a last resort
