The Nigerian High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi, to death by hanging after finding him guilty of culpable homicide in connection with her death on April 8, 2022.
The ruling was delivered on Monday, April 28, 2025, by Justice Nwosu-Iheme after the court had held that the prosecution had proven the burden of proof placed on it by the law and subsequently found the defendant guilty.
Osinachi tragically passed away in April 2022, allegedly as a result of being beaten by her husband, Peter Nwachukwu.
Peter Nwachukwu faced a 23-count charge, which included culpable homicide (punishable by death), criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, spousal battery, and other offences.
Peter Nwachukwu Sentenced to Death
Nwachukwu pleaded not guilty to the charges, however, the court found him guilty based on the compelling evidence presented by the prosecution.
Throughout the trial, the prosecution called 17 witnesses, including Osinachi’s two children, who testified against Nwachukwu. Additionally, 25 documents were submitted as evidence. In his defence, Nwachukwu testified and called four witnesses, presenting four exhibits in support of his case.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme sentenced Peter Nwachukwu to death by hanging on Count 1 for culpable homicide. For the other charges, Nwachukwu received varying sentences, including two years’ imprisonment on several counts, six months on one count, and a fine for additional offenses.

Death of Osinachi
On April 8, 2022, 42-year-old gospel singer Osinachi passed away at a hospital in Abuja, Nigeria. Her husband and manager, Peter Nwachukwu, a pastor, initially claimed that she had been suffering from an undisclosed illness.
However, later her family members and friends alleged that her death was a result of injuries sustained from domestic violence.
Osinachi’s four children later told Nigerian authorities that their father had subjected their mother to constant violence, and that he had forced them to keep it a secret.

Who is Osinachi?
Osinachi Nwachukwu was born in 1979 – and died on 8 April 2022. She was a renowned Nigerian gospel singer and worship leader, celebrated for her powerful voice and spiritual devotion.
She gained national prominence with the 2017 hit song “Ekwueme,” a collaboration with Prospa Ochimana, which has amassed over 71 million views on YouTube. Other notable tracks include “Nara Ekele” (with Pastor Paul Enenche) and “You No Dey Use Me Play” (with Emma).
