Press-on nails and salon gel manicures offer options for people who want polished nails without committing to traditional nail extensions.

For Kenyan consumers, the main differences are the initial cost, application time, how long the manicure lasts, and the potential effects on natural nails.

Press-On Nails

Press-on nails are pre-shaped artificial nails that can be easily applied at home using nail glue or adhesive tabs.

Locally available press-on kits typically cost between KSh550 and KSh800, and some kits include glue, adhesive tabs, a nail file, and a cuticle stick.

24-piece sets costs approximately KSh335, while 60-piece sets are priced at around KSh561 on Kenyan online listings.

Reusable deCurated sets are valued between KSh 899 and KSh 1,000, and Handmade sets can cost around KSh 1,799.

When applied correctly, some modern press-on sets can last up to two weeks, although the actual wear time depends on the adhesive, nail preparation, and how the nails are used.

Press-ons also require less preparation than a salon manicure. Users can choose a suitable size, prepare their natural nails, and attach the artificial nails without a curing lamp.

However, removal still requires care, according to Taryn Murray, a dermatologist at Cleveland Clinic, to avoid damage, infections, and allergic reactions.

Further, she explains that press-ons can trap moisture between the artificial and natural nail, creating conditions where bacteria and fungi can thrive, advising that press-on nails should be kept relatively short.

“The main risks of press-on nails are infections, allergic reactions, and damage to various parts of the nail unit. The longer the nail is, the more likely it is to cause separation between the natural nail and the nail bed,” Taryn Murray advises.

Salon Gel Manicure

Gel manicures involve applying gel polish to the natural nail and curing each layer under a UV or LED lamp.

According to nail technicians and experts, a properly applied gel manicure can generally last 10 to 14 days before signs of wear appear.

Unlike press-ons, gel manicures normally require more equipment and preparation.

The process involves preparing the natural nail, applying several thin layers of gel polish, and curing each layer.

In addition, the cost can be higher depending on the salon, location, and type of nail art selected.

Across several salons, the minimum price for plain gel is KSh399, while tips plus gel are listed at KSh499 and extra-long tips plus gel at KSh799.

Nail art is charged separately at KSh 50 per nail, while other services, such as overlays and ombré, cost more.

Other Nairobi mobile service providers list gel application from KSh2,350, with a full manicure and plain gel priced at KSh4,700.

However, gel manicures have potential drawbacks. The American Academy of Dermatology emphasizes that repeated gel manicures can contribute to nail brittleness, peeling, and cracking.

The organization recommends taking breaks between gel manicures and moisturizing the nails and cuticles.

Designs Available for Both Press-On Nails and Gel Manicures

Both press-on nails and salon gel manicures can feature a wide range of designs, including French tips, ombré, chrome, glazed, cat-eye, marble, floral, animal print, abstract, geometric, glitter, rhinestones and gems, 3D designs, metallic finishes, nude and minimalist styles.

Alternatively, one can opt for solid colors, color-blocking, swirl designs, polka dots, checkerboard patterns, tie-dye, aura nails, matte and glossy finishes, Y2K-inspired designs, cartoon and character designs, seasonal and holiday themes, custom lettering and mixed nail-art designs.

Nail Health and Removal

The AAD advises against picking or scraping off gel polish because it can damage the natural nail when removing both press-on and gel manicures.

It also recommends proper removal using acetone or having the manicure professionally removed.

For artificial nails, dermatologists also advise limiting continuous use because repeated applications and removals can leave natural nails thin, brittle, and dry.
