Ahmed Maalim Hassan is the newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Banissa Constituency.
In the November 27 by-election, he secured 10,431 votes and was declared the winner on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
He made history as the first MP to be elected on a UDA ticket in the region.
The seat fell vacant after former MP Kullow Maalim Hassan died while undergoing treatment at the Aga Khan University Hospital after a hit-and-run motorcycle accident in Nairobi’s South B estate on March 25, 2023.
Ahmed Maalim Early Life and Age
Ahmed holds dual citizenship in Kenya and the United Kingdom. He is the brother of the late Kullow Maalim Hassan.
According to his Kenyan passport, Hassan was born in Mandera County on April 4, 1974.
His legal identity has come under scrutiny after it was revealed his British passport listed him as Ali Barre Sheto of Somali nationality, while his Kenyan passport bears the name Ahmed Maalim Hassan.
Hassan Faces Legal Setback in His Political Career
During his Banissa Campaign period, he faced a legal challenge regarding his eligibility to contest, with a petitioner questioning the authenticity of his identity documents.
“Mr Hassan failed to disclose his dual citizenship to the IEBC and the returning officer in Banisa, thereby misleading the IEBC and the public, and fraudulently acquiring eligibility. By presenting himself under different names and identity documents, Mr Hassan has engaged in identity fraud and undermined the integrity of the electoral process,” the petitioner stated.
However, Hassan dismissed the allegations, maintaining that he is Kenyan by birth, holds only one national ID, and has never resided in Britain.

He noted that his intention to serve his community following the death of his brother and described the petition as politically motivated, linked to rivalries in Mandera ahead of the 2027 elections.
“That matter was filed at the IEBC and dismissed. You can see that was an afterthought decision by the petitioner and his company. This is a politically motivated petition, but I will sail through.”
“I am Kenyan by birth and hold one ID card. I have never resided in Britain as claimed. I have been in South Africa for a while and I decided to come back home to serve my community after my brother’s death.”
