Cable News Network (CNN) journalist Larry Madowo, expressed skepticism about winning an award, questioning the significance of what he terms as ‘so many pointless awards’.
Madowo shared an image where he was listed among Africa’s Most Impactful People in 2023, asking what the award actually meant.
The organization congratulated Madowo, recognizing his “outstanding impact” as one of the 100 Most Impactful Africans in 2023.
“Congratulations Larry Madowo, in recognition of your outstanding IMPACT, we celebrate you as one of the 100 Most Impactful Africans who have raised global awareness of Africa’s many potentials and values through the industry you represent in 2023,” reads the poster shared by the journalist.
Despite this acknowledgment, Madowo openly questioned the value of such awards, arousing mixed reaction from netizens.
“What does this even mean? Why are there so many pointless awards?” he posed.
Public Reaction to Larry’s Sentiments
Some supported Madowo, emphasizing the increasing number of awards and the need to question their relevance.
“Did you pay for it? If not, awards are being churned out here and there these days. Most individuals/organizations give awards to increase their own visibility through expected publicity in coverage of the award in the news or through association with famous names.” said Dejenesellassie, an X platform user.
Others urged him to accept the recognition graciously, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging hard work and dedication.
In the comments, individuals reminisced about Madowo’s humble beginnings, highlighting his career journey from KTN to CNN.
Fredrick Odoyo Maira, chimed in the discussion saying,” You wouldn’t say this back in the days! Remember when you started at KTN? Hosting that business show from 2 pm on weekdays!”
While some agreed with his perspective on awards, others argued that recognition, regardless of its form, is valuable and should be accepted with humility.
