Several African countries host the U.S. military bases that support counterterrorism, surveillance, and regional security operations.

These facilities strengthen local forces and enable the U.S. to maintain a strategic presence on the continent.

The U.S. also has smaller facilities and rotational deployment bases in countries including Ethiopia, Ghana, Senegal, Tunisia, and Morocco.

African countries with the United States military bases and facilities include:

  • Kenya
  • Djibouti
  • Somalia
  • Niger

U.S. military Base in Kenya

Kenya is home to Camp Simba in Manda Bay, located near the Somali border in Lamu County.

The base is a crucial hub in counterterrorism operations targeting Al-Shabaab, intelligence gathering, and training of Kenyan forces.

Camp Simba was established in 2004 as a U.S. Forward Operating Location (FOL).

It started as a small, low-profile facility used mainly for training Kenyan naval special forces and supporting counter-terrorism missions in Somalia.

The Airfield was enhanced in 2006 to increase personnel and aircraft capacity.

The base hosts contractor-operated intelligence-gathering aircraft and U.S. Air Force units, such as the 475th Expeditionary Air Base Squadron

The role of the military base is to:

  • Conduct operations in enhancing partner nation capacity,
  • Promote regional stability,
  • Dissuade conflict
  • Protect U.S. and partner interests.

U.S. Military base in Djibouti

Djibouti hosts the largest U.S. base in Africa, Camp Lemonnier

Camp Lemonnier is the only United States Navy base in Africa, which also serves as the headquarters for United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).

It is positioned at the “Gate to the Red Sea,” allowing the U.S. monitor and respond to threats in Yemen and Somalia, including al-Qaeda, ISIS, and al-Shabaab.

It also supports more than 4,500 troops and civilian contractors from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps.

The base accommodates thousands of U.S. and allied troops, supporting operations across Somalia, Yemen, Sudan, and Ethiopia.

Its role includes drone operations, intelligence gathering, and naval coordination in the Red Sea region.

US Military Base in Somalia

In Somalia, U.S. forces operate forward locations and rotational facilities, including Baledogle Airfield and areas near Mogadishu Airport, which support airstrikes, intelligence missions, and training of Somali forces.

U.S. Airbase in Niger

In West Africa, the U.S. has two airbases: Air Base 101 in Niamey and Air Base 201 in Agadez, both in Niger.

The main roles of the forces in the bases include sharing Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) data with allied and partner nations, training local military units to combat terrorists on the ground.

However, the 2023 failure between Niger and the US has resulted in the termination of this relationship, and US troops have begun to exit this territory due to the poor relationship.

Country Major Base Status
Kenya Camp Simba (Manda Bay) Active
Djibouti Camp Lemonnier Permanent
Somalia Baledogle, Mogadishu Rotational
Niger Air Base 201 Reduced

Apart from the major bases, the U.S. also has smaller facilities or rotational deployments in several African countries:

Country Type of Presence
Ethiopia Security cooperation, limited access
Ghana Training and logistics support
Senegal Surveillance cooperation
Tunisia Counterterrorism facilities
Morocco Joint exercises and access
Burkina Faso (past) Intelligence support (reduced)

These bases allow the U.S. to respond flexibly to security threats, conduct joint exercises, and maintain intelligence and surveillance networks across Africa.

Bases may also become targets for terrorist attacks, posing risks to surrounding communities due to foreign influence and potential threats.
