Kenya Airways has appointed Esther Koimett as a Non-Executive Director representing KQ Lenders Company 2017 Limited, effective January 26, 2026.
In a s statement on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the company described Esther Koimett as one of Kenya’s most distinguished and experienced public servants.
“Ms. Koimett is an accomplished public servant with over 35 years’ experience spanning across investment promotion, banking, privatisation, public enterprise reform, and public policy,” read part of the statement.
Esther Koimett has extensive experience in both the public and private sectors, where she has led, structured, and executed several high-profile and strategic transactions, projects, and initiatives on behalf of the Government of Kenya, including the IPOs of KenGen and Safaricom.

She has served at the highest levels of government, notably as Principal Secretary at the State Department of Broadcasting and Telecommunications, where she provided policy direction and leadership to realize Kenya’s digital economy and drive the growth of the wider ICT industry.

She also oversaw several state corporations within her department, including the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), the Postal Corporation of Kenya, the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), the Media Council of Kenya, the Kenya Film Classification Board, the Kenya Film Commission, the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication, and the Kenya Yearbook Editorial Board.
Koimett also served as the Principal Secretary at the State Department for Transport, where her responsibilities included providing guidance and oversight of key state corporations involved in transport infrastructure and services. She was instrumental in addressing stalled road construction projects and regularly engaged parliamentary committees to report on progress.
Her other notable roles include serving as Investment Secretary and Director General, Public Investments and Portfolio Management, at the National Treasury; Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism and Information; and Managing Director and CEO of the Kenya Post Office Savings Bank.
Esther Koimett has extensive board experience and currently chairs the Boards of M-Pesa Holdings Company Ltd and AAR Insurance Kenya Ltd. She has previously served on several boards, including those of Safaricom PLC, the Nairobi Securities Exchange, Kenya Commercial Bank, and the Kenya Ports Authority, among others.

She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and an MBA from the University of Nairobi, as well as an Advanced Management Programme (AMP) certificate from Strathmore University.
Esther Koimett is the firstborn daughter of the late, powerful Moi-era politician and businessman Nicholas Biwott.
She is married and blessed with four children.
