The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory warning of widespread downpours across several regions of the country.
According to an advisory shared on Tuesday, March 3, heavy rainfall is expected from the evening of March 3 to March 9, 2026.
The rains are expected to intensify between March 4 and 7, raising concerns about potential flooding, poor visibility, and disruptions to transport and daily activities.
Residents and authorities have been urged to take necessary precautions to minimize risks to life and property.
Regions at Risk and Expected Rainfall Patterns
According to the weatherman, counties most likely to experience heavy rainfall exceeding 20mm in 24 hours include Turkana, Samburu, Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Kericho, Bomet, Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Nairobi, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Taita-Taveta, Kitui, Kwale, Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Isiolo, Marsabit, Garissa, and parts of Wajir and Mandera.

The department notes that the rainfall is likely to peak between March 4 and 7 before gradually subsiding in most areas by March 8.
However, heavy rainfall is expected to persist in the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, parts of the Central Highlands, the Southeastern lowlands, and the Coastal region until March 9.
Safety Measures and Public Precautions
The Meteorological Department has also issued safety tips to Kenyans, to be observed during the stated period, including:
- Avoid walking, swimming, or driving through floodwaters and steering clear of open fields, rivers, or drainage channels.
- Avoid taking shelter under trees or near grilled windows during thunderstorms to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.
The weather department also requested the public to avoid open fields during storms to avoid rainfall-related accidents.
Citizens have been additionally asked to ensure that they stay informed about the weather changes to be able to take necessary precautions during the rainy season.
Weather conditions are to be closely monitored, and updates on the weather changes will be issued promptly to the public through official channels.

Earlier Rainfall Warning by the Kenya Meteorological Department
Earlier on, the meteorological department listed areas that will experience rainfall during this period as the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, South-eastern Lowlands, the Coast, Western, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya.
Maximum temperatures above 30 degrees are expected during the day in the Coast, South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya.
At night, temperatures below 10 degrees will be expected in parts of the Central Highlands, the Central Rift Valley, and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro.
