Richard Omwela is a Kenyan advocate and corporate leader with over 45 years of experience in legal practice.
He is currently a Partner and Head of Corporate, Commercial, and Real Estate at one of Kenya’s oldest law firms, Dentons Hamilton Harrison & Mathews.
Career and Professional Background
Legal Expertise- he specializes in high-value, complex transactions, including public-private partnerships (PPPs), mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, and regulatory compliance.
Leadership at Dentons HHM- he formerly served as the Managing Partner of Hamilton Harrison & Mathews, which is now part of Dentons. He remains a senior partner after handing over the managing partner role to Sigee Koech in 2024.
In December 2025, he was conferred the prestigious rank of Senior Counsel (SC) by President William Ruto, in recognition of his distinguished contributions to the legal profession.

Between 2021 and 2022, he served at Rotary International as a Past District Governor for Rotary International District 9212, covering Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and South Sudan.
Unlike many advocates who move between firms, Omwela has spent his entire 45-year legal career at Hamilton Harrison & Mathews, which is now called Dentons HHM, since leaving law school.
In 2003, Omwela famously turned down an appointment as a High Court judge by President Mwai Kibaki, citing the inappropriate timing and manner in which the offer was conveyed.
Early Life and Educational Background
Omwela was born in Omuhaya region, Vihiga County in Western Kenya, attended Ebusiloli Primary School, and is a prominent alumnus of Kakamega High School, an institution famously known as “The School of Champions”.

He attended the University of Nairobi from 1976 to 1979, earning a Bachelor of Laws (LLB, Hons).
Following his degree, he attended the Kenya School of Law in 1980, where he obtained a Diploma in Law, which is required for admission to the bar.
He was admitted to the bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1980.
