Gibson Kamau Kuria is a distinguished Kenyan legal scholar, Senior Counsel, and human rights activist. 

He is widely recognized for his decades-long struggle for constitutionalism, the rule of law, and democracy in Kenya.

His early academic work focused heavily on family law, constitutional law, and the philosophy of legal education.

Early Life and Educational Background

Kuria was born on March 3, 1947, in Mahiga Location, Othaya Division of Nyeri District, Kenya.

He attended Mahiga Intermediate School from 1954 to 1961, and later completed his high school education at Kagumo High School from 1962 to 1967.

Dr. Kuria’s legal education spanned three different countries, reflecting a broad intellectual background in both civil and common law:

Bachelor of Laws (LLB) – He graduated in March 1971 with an Upper Second-Class Honors degree from the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.) – furthering his studies at Oxford University in the United Kingdom saw him earn a B.C.L. degree.

Honorary Doctorate (LL. D) – In May 1991, Lewis & Clark Law School in Oregon, USA, awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws in recognition of his extraordinary human rights work and legal activism.

University of Nairobi – the Senior Counsel joined the Faculty of Law as a tutorial fellow in May 1971 and was promoted to lecturer in 1974, teaching and conducting legal research for 13 years until his detention in 1987.

Gibson Kamau’s Career Background

In 1981, Kamau co-founded the influential law firm Kamau Kuria & Kiraitu Advocates alongside Kiraitu Murungi and Aaron Ringera.

He spent 13 years, from 1974 to 1987, as a law lecturer at the University of Nairobi, specializing in family and comparative law.

The advocate served as Chairman of the LSK from 1999 to 2001, after serving as its Vice-Chairman from 1997 to 1998.

East Africa Law Society (EALS) – advocating for regional judicial integration, he served as Secretary General from 1995 to 1998.

Exile & International Academic Fellowships – After fleeing political persecution in July 1990, he served as a visiting fellow at both Harvard Law School and Yale Law School.

Appointed as Assisting Counsel in 2003 to investigate Kenya’s largest financial scandal, a service at the Goldenberg Inquiry.

In 2003, he was appointed to a tribunal inquiring into allegations against the then-Chief Justice, Bernard Chunga, leading to his subsequent resignation.

He holds the highest professional honour for advocates in Kenya, Senior Counsel, a title officially gazetted and recognized for his outstanding distinction in the practice of law.

Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award, which he earned in1988 for his courageous defence of human rights.

The ABA Rule of Law Award was bestowed on him by the American Bar Association in 1990 for his work in advancing global human rights.

In 1993, Kuria was recognized by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), Kenya, as the year’s most outstanding legal professional (Jurist of the Year).

The legal practitioner is the founder of ICRI, which he established in 2002 as the International Centre for Constitutional Research and Governance to ensure the long-term protection of constitutional gains.

In 2023, Dr. Kuria successfully utilized the National Police Service Act to defend his private property against an armed invasion, reinforcing his lifelong commitment to using the law as a shield for constitutional rights.

Family Background

Kamau Kuria is married and the father of four children.

Following his 11-month detention without trial in 1987, he reunited with his wife and daughter after they joined him in exile in the United States, where he served as a visiting fellow at Harvard and Yale.

He resides with his family in the Karen suburb of Nairobi.
