The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather update for the period between February 25 and March 3, 2026.
In the update shared on Wednesday, February 25, the Weather Department warned of heavy rainfall that is expected until early March 2026.
The authority has also shared safety measures for Kenyans to observe during the heavy downpour and those who will be affected.
Heavy Downpour Expected in the country
According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, rainfall exceeding 20 millimeters within 24 hours has been recorded in several areas, and it is expected to continue from February 25 to February 28, 2026.

The agency noted that the rain may also spread into parts of Northeastern Kenya during this period.
The department has cautioned that flooding may occur even in areas that have not experienced heavy rain, especially in downstream areas where water flows from higher ground.
Urban centres, low-lying settlements, and regions near rivers are considered particularly vulnerable.
While heavy rains are expected to continue in the short term, forecasters say a gradual reduction in intensity is likely from March 1, 2026, in some parts of the country.
These include the Southeastern Lowlands, the Coastal region, and the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi.
However, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Highlands West of the Rift Valley are projected to remain under heavy rainfall conditions until March 3, 2026.
These regions have historically been prone to flooding during prolonged rainy seasons, increasing the risk to communities, farms, and infrastructure.
Counties expected to be affected include Counties: Migori, Nyamira, Bugoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Kericho, Bomet, Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Tharaka- Nithi, Meru, Nairobi, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Taita-Taveta, Kitui, Kwale, Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi and parts of Isiolo, Marsabit and Garissa.

Kenya Met Issues Safety Warnings and Preparedness Measures
The meteorological department has issued several public safety advisories to residents in all affected regions.
Among other precautions, the weather department advises Kenyans to remain alert for flash floods, overflowing rivers, and sudden water accumulation on roads and in residential areas.
Members of the public have also been urged not to drive through flooded roads or walk in moving water, as even shallow currents can be dangerous.
In addition, the Weather Man states that open fields should be avoided during storms.
The department has assured the public that weather conditions are being closely monitored and that further updates will be issued promptly if there are significant changes. In the meantime, citizens are urged to stay informed through official channels and take precautionary measures to minimize risks during the ongoing rainy period.
