General Kiambati wa Njora, a man described as the last surviving General of Mau Mau has died at the age of 106, his family has confirmed.
Known for his front-line bravery and unwavering commitment, he chose to fight alongside 12 top generals who led the Mau Mau rebellion from 1952 until independence.
The passing of Kiambati marks the end of an era. He was among the last living links to the top-tier military leadership that served alongside Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi and Field Marshal Muthoni Kirima.
History of General Kiambati wa Njora
Kiambati was among a small group of Mau Mau commanders whose guerrilla operations were concentrated in Nyandarua, a key battleground during the armed resistance against British colonial administration in the 1950s.
Alongside 11 other generals, he played a critical role in organising and sustaining armed resistance in the forests.

In his later years, Kiambati emerged as a vocal advocate for forgotten freedom fighters, frequently speaking out about the hardships faced by Mau Mau veterans, many of whom lived in poverty despite their role in securing the country’s freedom.
He repeatedly called on the government and the public to offer greater recognition, dignity, and material support to surviving veterans and their families.
From 1952 to 1960, General Kiambati wa Njora was a high-ranking commander in the Kenya Land and Freedom Army (KLFA), operating during the State of Emergency.
Like other generals, he operated from the forests, primarily the Aberdares and Mt. Kenya regions, to orchestrate guerrilla warfare against colonial forces.
In his later years, he was celebrated as a national hero during Mashujaa Day celebrations in October 2024 for his role in securing Kenya’s independence.
Education
General Kiambati attended Karuna-ini Primary School in 1934 and later Tumutumu Mission School, where his brilliance and discipline stood out.
