The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a scheduled maintenance exercise on its iTax system, which will temporarily disrupt access for all users on March 22.
In a notice issued on March 21, KRA said the iTax platform will be unavailable on Sunday, March 22, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm, a four‑hour outage that will affect all users.
During this period, taxpayers will not be able to file returns, make payments, or access any services on the platform.
“The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) wishes to inform all stakeholders that the iTax system will undergo scheduled maintenance,” the notice read. “During this period, the iTax platform will be temporarily unavailable, and users will not be able to access services including filing returns, making payments, or viewing tax records.”
The announcement comes as many Kenyans rush to file their annual tax returns ahead of the June 30 deadline, a period that typically sees heavy traffic on the iTax system, especially in the evenings. KRA says the maintenance work is part of routine system upgrades aimed at improving service delivery.
“Any inconvenience caused is highly regretted,” the authority said, advising taxpayers to plan their submissions outside the scheduled downtime.
Taxpayers intending to file returns or complete other tax‑related transactions have been urged to do so either before the maintenance window begins or after services are fully restored later in the night.
The iTax platform is KRA’s main online system used for tax registration, filing returns, making payments, and accessing tax records.

Deadline Nears as iTax Activity Increases
With the June 30 filing deadline fast approaching, taxpayers are rushing to submit their tax returns through the iTax system to avoid penalties. This normally leads to a spike in activity on the platform, particularly from taxpayers filing Nil returns.
KRA has warned that filing a Nil return does not shield individuals from scrutiny, noting that it is now using systems such as eTIMS to verify whether a person earned income.
Taxpayers have been urged to log in to iTax, review the pre‑filled details carefully, correct any errors, and pay any tax due before the deadline to avoid fines or further enforcement action.
KRA Uses eTIMS Data to Identify Undeclared Income
The intensified enforcement follows KRA’s reinstatement of Nil return filings, which had previously been suspended as part of efforts to tighten tax compliance.

Using data generated through the Electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS), the authority has identified individuals who declared having no income despite recording transactions.
In one message sent to a taxpayer suspected of evasion, KRA said its records showed that although the individual filed a Nil Income Tax Return for 2024, income‑generating transactions were recorded in 2025.
“Dear (USER), our records indicate that while you filed a Nil Income Tax Return for 2024, you earned income in 2025 as evidenced by your eTIMS transmissions,” the message read.
KRA further advised the taxpayer to log into the iTax portal, file the pre‑populated 2025 tax return, and settle any outstanding tax, noting that data captured through eTIMS will be used to enforce compliance.
