Benedict Mutua, a Professor of Water Resources, Hydraulics, and Environmental Engineering, is the Vice-Chancellor of the Technical University of Kenya (TUK).
He was appointed as VC following the retirement of the founding vice-chancellor, Francis Aduol, who had been holding the position on Acting capacity since May 2023.
Prior to his appointment, Mutua served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Planning, Partnerships, Research, and Innovation at Kibabii University.
Prof. Mutua began his teaching and research career in 1990 at Egerton University and subsequently served as a researcher, Lecturer, and Professor.
Benedict Mutua Educational Background
He holds a diploma and a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering from Egerton University.
Mutua earned his MEng. Sc. in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a Fluid Dynamics and Hydraulics Engineering concentration from the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Prof. Mutua pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Water Resources and Hydrology at Tel Aviv University in Israel and later pursued a master’s in water resources engineering in Water Engineering Systems and Management at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
In addition, he holds a PhD and a postdoctoral degree in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Austria.

He also holds a Doctorate in Management Studies (DMS) in Human Resource Management from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany.
Career Background
From July 2016 to August 2023, Mutua served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Planning, Partnerships, Research, and Innovation and as an acting Vice-Chancellor at Kibabii University.
Mutua also served as a Director of the School of Graduate Studies at Egerton University, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, and Chairperson of the Department of Agricultural Engineering.
In 2013, he served as a Member of the Council at the then Laikipia University College.
Mutua was appointed to the selection panel for the National Council for Science, Technology, and Innovation (NACOSTI) board by the Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi, in January 2026.
He is the current Vice Chancellor of the Technical University of Kenya (TUK).

Achievements
As a VC, he has fostered collaborations with international institutions, including the China-Africa Automotive Development Forum, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the British Academy, thereby facilitating research on green fertilizer production and sustainable packaging.
Mutua has won International Recognition, including Marquis Who’s Who in the World, for his research contribution in the Field of Engineering and Science.
He was a thematic leader in designing and developing curricula for various universities in Kenya.
Mutua has published several University-level books and book chapters; scientific articles in peer-reviewed international journals; peer-reviewed conference proceedings; peer-reviewed technical reports; a number of consultancies and project reports; and refereed learning modules.
Mutua designed and developed a simplified tool for Integrated Water and Sanitation Systems to be used by engineers and planners for different water and sanitation systems in towns and cities.
