Nation Media Group (NMG) has announced a major a reorganization of its editorial leadership across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
The changes, announced by Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Geoffrey Odundo, take effect immediately and affect some of the group’s most senior editorial positions across the region.
The appointments follow a review of NMG’s editorial structure and form part of ongoing efforts to strengthen newsroom leadership and enhance content delivery across East Africa.
Joe Ageyo Takes Charge in Uganda
Dr Joe Ageyo has been appointed as the Editor-in-Chief of NMG Uganda. Ageyo, who has been serving as Group Editor-in-Chief, will now oversee the company’s editorial operations in Uganda, including Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM and Dembe FM.
His appointment comes at a crucial time for the Ugandan operation, which recently resumed normal operations after a temporary shutdown that affected several of the group’s media outlets.

Ageyo was among senior NMG executives involved in efforts to restore operations in the country.
In Uganda, Washington Gikunju has been appointed Acting Managing Editor. Gikunju has previously held several senior editorial positions within the group.
NMG Leadership Team Named for Kenya
In Kenya, Harry Misiko has been appointed Acting Editor-in-Chief. Misiko takes over leadership of a newsroom that has transformed in recent years as the company accelerated its shift toward digital-first journalism and audience-centered content strategies.
Supporting him will be Dann Mwangi, named Acting Managing Editor, Broadcast and New Media, and John Kiplagat, who assumes the position of Acting Managing Editor, Publishing.
Justus Wanga has been named Acting Lead Editor, Weekend Edition, while Michael Owuor takes over as Acting Lead Editor, Daily Nation. Michael Omondi becomes Acting Lead Editor, Business Daily, East Africa’s leading business publication.
Veteran broadcaster Ben Kitili has been appointed Acting Lead Editor, Broadcasting, a role that places him in charge of editorial oversight for NMG’s broadcast platforms.
Meanwhile, Alex Ndegwa has been named Editor, Content Hub, where he will help coordinate content production across various newsroom teams.

James Smart Moves to Tanzania
In Tanzania, seasoned journalist and television anchor James Smart has been named as the Acting Managing Editor, Broadcast and New Media at Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL), NMG’s Tanzanian subsidiary.
Smart is one of the region’s most recognizable broadcast journalists, having built a reputation through news presentation and current affairs programming.
In his new role, he will oversee broadcast and digital media operations at MCL, publisher of some of Tanzania’s most influential media brands.
NMG’s latest changes come amid transformation efforts within the company, which has in recent years implemented newsroom restructuring initiatives to improve digital innovation, audience engagement and operational efficiency across its East African operations.
In communicating the appointments, NMG CEO Geoffrey Odundo said the changes followed a review of the Group’s editorial structure and evolving business requirements across the region.
He congratulated the affected editors on their appointments and called on employees across the organization to support them as they transition into their new responsibilities.
