The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued new Easter road safety guidelines following a fatal traffic accident on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway that left ten people dead and five others injured.
In a notice dated April 4, NTSA urged motorists to exercise caution during the Easter travel period, when traffic volumes on highways are expected to increase.
The Authority emphasized adherence to traffic rules, including observing speed limits, maintaining lane discipline, and driving responsibly, especially at night.
NTSA Easter Advisory Issued After Fatal Gilgil Road Crash
Addressing the risks posed by vehicle breakdowns on highways, NTSA warned motorists against leaving stalled vehicles on the road without proper warning.
“Remove stalled vehicles as soon as possible and place warning signs at a safe distance to warn approaching motorists,” stated the Authority.
NTSA warned drivers against drinking and driving, saying alcohol continues to be a major cause of deadly crashes during holiday periods.
The Authority also reminded motorists that staying sober is essential for keeping themselves, their passengers, and other road users safe.
NTSA has warned of the dangers of driver fatigue, especially during night travel, and has reminded drivers to plan their trips adequately, rest before traveling, and take breaks when tired.

The Authority further stressed the importance of vehicle maintenance, urging drivers to ensure their vehicles are serviced and roadworthy before taking to the road.
In addition, NTSA called on the public to play an active role in promoting road safety by reporting reckless driving to the police through the 911 hotline.
The Authority noted that many road crashes recorded during holiday travel are preventable through discipline, vigilance, and shared responsibility among road users.
This appeal is part of NTSA’s ongoing Usalama Barabarani campaign, in which the Authority urges motorists to put safety first and reminds road users that no journey is worth risking human life.
