The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has revealed new details on a fatal road traffic accident along the Nyeri–Nyahururu highway near Dedan Kimathi University that resulted in the deaths of fifteen people.
In a statement dated March 28 and signed by the Director General, NTSA confirmed that preliminary reports indicate a collision occurred between a lorry and a Passenger Service Vehicle (PSV), causing significant loss of life.
“Preliminary reports confirm that a collision occurred between a lorry and a Passenger Service Vehicle (PSV), resulting in the tragic loss of fifteen (15) lives,” they noted.
The authority confirmed that hospitals are coordinating to ensure that the deceased are treated with dignity and that the injured receive immediate medical attention.
Preliminary Findings and Causes
NTSA, in their statement, noted that while the full investigation is ongoing, early indications point to a combination of factors, including reckless driving, excessive speeding, and the operation of an unserviceable lorry that likely lost control.
The authority emphasized that if these factors are confirmed, the accident was preventable
Further, they noted that adherence to traffic regulations and proper vehicle maintenance are critical in avoiding such incidents.
NTSA confirmed that it is dispatching a multi-agency team to the scene to conduct a comprehensive forensic reconstruction of the crash.

This includes gathering evidence to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the collision.
Additionally, audits of the PSV operator and lorry owner are underway to verify compliance with safety standards and licensing requirements.
“We will be conducting an immediate audit of the PSV operator and the owner of the lorry to verify compliance with safety standards and licensing requirements,” the director general noted.
NTSA Ramps Up Enforcement Following Fatal Nyeri–Nyahururu Crash
As a result of the fatal accident, NTSA confirmed intensified enforcement along the Nyeri–Nyahururu corridor and other major highways to remove unroadworthy vehicles, with a particular focus on commercial goods vehicles and PSVs.

The authority urged all motorists, especially commercial drivers, to exercise maximum caution, emphasizing that reckless driving is a deliberate choice with potentially deadly consequences.
NTSA also confirmed that any individual or entity found to have contributed to the accident through negligence or violation of traffic laws will be held fully accountable.
Further, the authority notified that updates on the investigation will be provided as they become available, and the authority extended condolences to the victims’ families.
