Kenyan passports usually expire after 10 years, after which they must be renewed. The Kenyan government has set guidelines and procedure in renewing passports for Kenyans living outside the country.
Kenyans are no longer required to return to Nairobi to renew their passports.
Through the e-Citizen portal, Kenyans who need their passports updated can now log in, fill in the details, and later proceed to the embassies or consulates for biometric and photo verification.
The government also advises that citizens should always renew their passports on time in order to avoid inconveniences in case of emergencies, also to abide by the law of the country they are in.

How to Renew Your Kenyan Passport
To start the renewal process, Kenyans are required to log in to their eCitizen portals, which can be accessed on their phones from anywhere in the world.
Once in the portal, you’ll be required to fill in Form 19.
You will also be required to pay the amount due in the portal and print the payment invoice.
The fees paid depend on the number of pages in the passport you are purchasing.
Once the payment is confirmed, the system generates a pre-filled form and payment receipts, and you are required to print the forms and present in the embassies or consulates during verification.
After completing the process, you will be required to contact the Kenyan embassies of the host country, where an appointment will be booked.
Attend Your Consular Appointment in Person
On the day of your appointment, you must appear in person at the Kenyan mission with all printed application materials and supporting documents for verification.
Required Documents for Renewal
- Printed the e-Citizen application form and all payment receipts.
- Original current (or expired) Kenyan passport.
- Original Kenyan National ID card and a copy.
- Four passport‑size photographs
- Two copies of the birth certificate
- Duly filled Consent Form for minors
- Copy of Kenyan passport biodata page only
- Proof of residence/visa or residency status in the host country
- Certified Copy of a recommender’s Kenya national identity card
- Copy of the bio-data page of a valid Kenya passport.
- Certified Copies of parents’ national identity cards and Death certificates, where applicable.
Recommendation for Passports
All passport applications must be recommended by a Kenyan Citizen in possession of a Valid Passport or a National Identity Card.
A person recommending should also not be a relative to the applicant.

The government also states that a person cannot recommend themselves and an invalid recommendation will be rejected on application
