Uhuru Signals Rematch with Ruto as Azimio Makes Comeback
Azimio la Umoja Coalition has returned to active politics after a leadership shake-up led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta on February 2, 2026.
The coalition named Kalonzo Musyoka as Party Leader, Caroli Omondi as Secretary‑General, and Philip Kisia as Executive Director. The decisions have since been sent to the Registrar of Political Parties.

The leadership reset is Azimio’s first formal reorganisation since Raila Odinga’s death in October 2025, and it restores a working command structure under Uhuru Kenyatta’s chairmanship.
The Azimio la Umoja officials have described the changes as a bid to “reposition and revitalise” the Coalition for the next phase of national engagement.
Reports that former president Kenyatta is backing Kalonzo Musyoka have since gained weight, after Azimio la Umoja formally installed the Wiper leader as the coalition’s Party Leader.
While Uhuru has avoided an outright public endorsement of a 2027 presidential candidate, the decision to elevate Kalonzo to the top Azimio position places him at the centre of opposition politics.
