The 49th President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Nelson Havi has defended President William Ruto against the current crisis facing the country.
Speaking to The Kenya Times, Havi said there is no problem with the president performing his executive duties and asked the protestors to criticize their Members of Parliament (MPs) who supported the controversial Finance Bill 2024.
“The President is doing his work as the executive. The person who bears the greatest responsibility is your elected Member of National Assembly because it was, he/she who voted yes,” Havi said.
He explained that the President rejected the bill and is right compared to the majority of the MPs who voted in its favor.
Havi defended Ruto stating that he allowed the protesters to present their views by picketing in a peacefully manner that is permitted by the law.

“For as long as they will hold the protest peacefully it’s okay, they can continue but they must realize the only way to alter the cause to an outcome preferred to them is on the ballot,” he said.
Nelson Havi Urges Gen Z to Register as Voters
In addition, the former LSK boss slammed Gen Z for refusing to register as voters and taking part in the 2022 general election.
“In the last election the youthful population refused to vote, and I was on the campaign trail we told those who we got to register and vote. Now they are seeing the importance of registering and voting. They must do the needful and participate in the election when the time comes,” he said.
Havi stated that the Kenya Kwanza government was elected by the people of Kenya, and they should point the root cause of the problem facing the country.

Elect Literate MPs
He noted that MPs must ensure they executive functions in accordance with the Constitution for the benefit of the people.
“The biggest problem we have in this country is in the legislature. It is the function of the legislature to enact laws, oversight the executive and ensure the Constitution is upheld,” he said.
“Going forward Kenyans should ensure the people they elect to the National Assembly and Senate are competent, independent and have the ability to present their views and push forward their demands.”
Besides, Havi said there is a future for the Gen Z and all Kenyans since the country is governed by the rule of law.

However, Nelso Havi informed the Gen Z that the government is changed through elections and not picketing.
He said the government in place was elected to serve for a period of five years and the youth will only have a chance in 2027 to eject them out.
“So, what the Gen Z must do is to register to vote, offer themselves to be voted in for any post including presidency. That is the only way they will be able to ensure that there is change of leadership,” Havi said.
