After Meru Members of County Assembly (MCAs) unanimously impeached Governor Kawira Mwangaza all eyes are now on the Deputy Governor (DG), Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia.
According to the Constitution, M’Ethingia will automatically become the next Meru governor if the Senate approves Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment.
“If a vacancy occurs in the office of county governor, the deputy county governor shall assume office as county governor for the remainder of the term of the county governor,” Article 182 (2) of the Constitution states.
Moreover, as the motion makes its way to the Senate for a critical hearing, Meru residents hold their breath, anticipating a shift in leadership that could reshape the trajectory of governance in the county.
The DG who is the son of former Njuri Ncheke chairman Paul M’Ethingia (late) came to the limelight in February 2022 after he was picked by Mwangaza as her running mate.
M’Ethingia and Governor Mwangaza were elected as independent candidates in the 2022 general elections demonstrating their commitment to effective governance.
Moreover, M’Ethingia who hails from Igembe South, was key in mitigating the political impact of Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi, who was United Democratic Alliance (UDA) gubernatorial candidate and is from the same area.
