Gachagua Responds to Ruto’s “Pepo Chafu” Remarks

Former Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday, December 15, responded to President William Ruto’s “pepo chafu” remarks, where the President referred to those opposing his projects.

While speaking during a church service in Nyeri County, Gachagua urged President Ruto to tone down his language and respect the electorate, even if they do not agree with his projects.

“There is no need to hurl insults at the citizens if they don’t agree with some of the things you do. If the people oppose certain initiatives, such as livestock vaccination, there is no need to insult them—especially those who made you the President. There is no reason to abuse the people of Kenya,” Gachagua said.

He further called on President Ruto to refrain from using vulgar language and to listen to the concerns of the citizens.

At the same time, Gachagua addressed the chaos that erupted during a funeral he attended in Limuru, Kiambu County, on Thursday, November 28. He accused the State of sponsoring the violence, alleging it was an attempt to kill him.

Gachagua claimed that the State is using unemployed youth in the Mount Kenya region to cause division among themselves. He accused the government of hiring goons to disrupt events he attends.

“The State has planned that in every meeting I attend within the region, they look for unemployed youths in Mount Kenya, give them handouts, and send them to disrupt my meetings. People then start fighting, and the President and his allies laugh at us, saying that the people of Mount Kenya are fighting among themselves,” the former Deputy President alleged.

He went on to urge President Ruto to respect the people of the Mount Kenya region and forget about the region’s support because they do not forgive betrayal which he is a part of.

President Ruto says there is an evil spirit among Kenyans opposing everything

Gachagua’s sentiments about President Ruto’s remarks come days after the Head of State called people opposing his projects “pepo chafu,” loosely translated to mean “evil spirit.”

The President said that no matter what project he intends to pursue, a section of Kenyans reject it.

“Mimi nataka kuwauliza, Wakenya, tafadhali, kuna pepo chafu ya upingamizi ya kupinga kila kitu: Affordable Housing wanaipinga, chanjo ya ng’ombe ya kuondoa magonjwa wanaipinga, university funding model wanaipinga, universal health coverage wanaipinga. Hata imefika wanapinga matoleo kanisani,”

I want to ask you, Kenyans, please, there is an evil spirit of opposition that opposes everything: Affordable Housing they oppose, cattle vaccination to eradicate diseases they oppose, the university funding model they oppose, universal health coverage they oppose. It has even come to the point where they oppose church offerings,” Ruto said.
