Former Deputy President (DP) and DCP Party leader Rigathi Gachagua claims that he made a huge sacrifice for the Gen Z.
Gachagua said the Gen Z protests of 2024 is what created the fallout between him and President William Ruto.
The former DP said he took a very firm position that the young people should be heard since their demands had merit.
“I did urge him to listen to them and consider doing away with the Finance Bill of 2024, which he refused. When a decision was made to deal with these young people, I disagreed,” he said.
Gachagua said with the President in a discussion after he told him that to disapprove the use of force against the youth.
The DCP party leader recalled calling a press conference in Mombasa after the incidents of June 25, 2024, where he disassociated himself from the actions of the government despite being the DP.
Gachagua said he disagreed with the President’s remarks labeling the protesting youth as criminals.
He emphasized that the youth were sons and daughters with genuine concerns, and they should not be massacred.
“Let nobody say that Gachagua is siding with Gen Z because he is out of the office. I am on record and videos are there that I took a position in support of our young people when I was in the office,” he said.

Sacrificing His Position
Gachagua said it is this position that led to impeachment dismissing claims that he started supporting the youth after he was removed from office.
“That created a problem between me and Ruto, he was offended, and he started to embark on how to get me out of the office which he successfully did or probably didn’t,” he added.
He stated that the Gen Z are intelligent and will decide who to support in the next election.
Gachagua said he sacrificed his position as DP with all the benefits just to support the Gen Z.
“Gen Z know who they can trust in this country. They know at their lowest moment when they were being killed and everybody was demonizing them, who came to stand for them? It was Gachagua. I sacrificed my job as deputy president, a very good job with perks, security and I said I want to stand with these children,” he said.
“I attracted to the wrath of Ruto for standing with them. The Gen Z will decide where they want to place their trust, I don’t want to force myself on Gen Z.”

Gachagua Explains Why He Did Not Join Protests
Further, Gachagua revealed that he was in his house the whole day during the June 25, 2025, protests.
He stated that he was following the demonstrations on television until the government stopped the live stream.
Gachagua said he did not want to join the protests because the Gen Z asked leaders and elders to keep off the protests during the 2024 demonstrations.
He explained that the youth do not want to be owned by anybody because they are not in the direction of any leader.
Additionally, he said the youth are bright, intelligent, innovative and doing their own things.
Financing Protests
He said the protests are not financed by anybody, dismissing claims that he was the sponsor.
“These are our young people who I think if I had turned up in the streets on Wednesday, it would have given credit to those very ridiculous accusations that I’m the one who finances Gen Z. I deliberately kept off because the Gen Z had asked us to keep off,” he said.
Gachagua said he has nothing to do with the protests and is not the leader or financier of Gen Z.
