As succession politics in the Mount Kenya region persist, politician Cate Waruguru has made claims that Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) in the area are being bought to divert loyalty from Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Waruguru has faulted the leaders for betraying Gachagua stating, “To Mt. Kenya MCAs, it is your turn to sip on the confidential vote head offered by the exterior secretary. Ensure you don’t undervalue your night meetings allowances.”
“These sponsored meetings held at Kitusuru and the one currently ongoing at Nokras Sagana should temporarily ease your hunger. Remember to split the betrayal fee being offered with your electorates.”
In a previous event, Waruguru urged Mt. Kenya leaders to support Gachagua instead of the Cabinet Secretary for Interior Kithure Kindiki, saying the deputy president helped them win political seats.
“I want to beseech our brother Kindiki, please remain the gentleman you have always been. And desist any attempt by greedy members of parliament to sell our community.”
The Succession Battle in Mt. Kenya Region
In a meeting held on September 12, 48 more legislators signed a document called the ‘Nyahururu Declaration’ supporting Kindiki to be the region’s leader. This came days after other eleven elected leaders from Mt. Kenya East also pledged allegiance to Kindiki. The move brought to 69 the number of leaders supporting the cabinet secretary for interior at the time.
The leaders reiterated that Kindiki would be the link between the region and the executive acting in a capacity to push the interests of the area in politics and governance.
“Accordingly, we, as the elected leaders from this region and its diaspora, unanimously resolve that our link to the national government be the Cabinet Secretary for the Interior and National Administration, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, whose responsibilities include the coordination of national government functions across the country.”

Division in the Mt. Kenya region has been evident in recent days with leaders from the area each pulling to their camp of interest. The rift has caused political enthusiasts to speculate on whether President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua are still on one team.
Gachagua-Ruto Politics Go Wild
Gachagua’s absence was recently noticed at an event graced by Ruto and speculations went wild in Kenya’s political arena.
He was reportedly supposed to attend a church service at the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa-Central in Nyeri County alongside Ruto, but he did not make it to the event.
Addressing a congregation at Baricho Catholic Parish on September 15 in Kirinyaga County, Gachagua said he was supposed to attend a function in Nyeri but having learned that there was a special occasion in Kirinyaga, he changed his mind.
“As I was heading to a church service in Nyeri, I heard that there would be some celebration here and I also heard that there would also be a cake, “ Gachagua said jokingly. He added that the event went on for quite some time and he couldn’t make it to attend Ruto’s event.
