Former Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) chairperson Macharia Njeru has declared his bid to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

His declaration comes as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other presidential candidates continue mobilizing voters ahead of the elections.

Njeru made the official announcement on October 5, 2026, describing his bid as the start of a new journey.

“The journey begins. Today, I officially announce my bid for the Presidency of the Republic of Kenya,” Njeru stated.

Who is Macharia Njeru?

Macharia Njeru is a lawyer and founding partner of Macharia-Mwangi & Njeru Advocates, where he has practiced since 1993.

He has specialized in commercial law, banking and financial services, mergers and acquisitions, property, corporate governance, and restructuring.

Njeru holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi and a postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.

He is also a Notary Public, Commissioner for Oaths and Certified Public Secretary.

Njeru’s professional background has also included membership of the Law Society of Kenya, the East African Law Society and the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries.

Public Service Record

Njeru was the founding chairperson of IPOA, serving from 2012 to 2018. The authority was established to provide civilian oversight over the work of the National Police Service.

Before his appointment to IPOA, Njeru served on the National Task Force on Police Reforms, commonly known as the Ransley Task Force, between 2008 and 2009.

He later served on the Police Reforms Implementation Committee, where he worked on legislation related to the restructuring of the National Police Service.

Njeru also served on the Judicial Service Commission after being elected as the Law Society of Kenya representative in 2019. He subsequently served as the commission’s vice chairperson.

His other corporate and public sector roles have included serving as chairperson of Fina Bank.

Sifuna’s Presidential Bid

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has taken over the leadership of The Equitable Party (TEP) as he prepares to contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election against President William Ruto.

Sifuna was unveiled as the party’s leader and presidential candidate on Sunday, October 4, 2026, during a political gathering in Nairobi attended by several leaders supporting his presidential bid.

However, Sifuna’s presidential bid has been developing under the Linda Mwananchi Movement, which endorsed him as its preferred presidential candidate in September.

The Nairobi senator earlier announced his intention to challenge Ruto in the 2027 presidential election, setting the stage for his bid for the presidency.

During the October 4 meeting, political figures including Siaya Governor James Orengo, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino were present.

Others associated with the presidential contest include former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa.
