A video of President Donald Trump from 2011 resurfaced online, drawing attention for its warnings that then-President Barack Obama would start a war with Iran. The clip, shared on Reddit by u/Yujin-Ha, was part of Trump’s “From the Desk of Donald Trump” vlog series, which ran on YouTube from 2011 to 2014.
While most of the original videos are no longer available on Trump’s YouTube account, this particular clip has been hosted on the Roll Call Factbase Videos channel for seven years, amassing over 102,000 views.
In the video, Trump criticized Obama for his handling of foreign policy, saying the former president would likely start a war with Iran because “he’s weak and he’s ineffective.” Trump added, “So the only way he figures that he’s going to get reelected…is to start a war with Iran.” He called it “an outrage” if Iran were attacked for political gain and insisted that the country “can be taken down in many ways.”
Trump’s 2011 remarks are now drawing attention as the United States and Israel conduct large-scale military strikes against Iran. On February 28, 2026, coordinated attacks killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, escalating the conflict and prompting retaliatory strikes. The U.S. military reported the first casualties on its side, with three service members killed and five seriously wounded.

The resurfacing of the video has ignited discussion online. On Reddit, users commented that Trump’s statements in 2011 mirror his current actions, noting the apparent alignment between his past predictions and present policy.
One user wrote, “Isn’t it funny that he always accuses others of things he does or intends to do,” while another added, “Surely we’re all aware that every accusation is a confession.” Similar reactions were seen in YouTube comments, highlighting the perceived irony of Trump’s earlier critique of Obama and his own current military decisions.
Historically, Trump has taken a different approach to Iran than Obama. While Obama avoided direct military confrontation, favoring economic sanctions and diplomacy, including the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), Trump withdrew the United States from the agreement in 2018.
He cited concerns that the deal did not address Iran’s missile program or regional proxy activities. Since then, his administration has carried out targeted military operations, including strikes on Iranian facilities, culminating in the recent escalation alongside Israeli forces.
Trump’s critics point to the resurfaced 2011 video as evidence of projection, suggesting that his warnings about Obama now reflect actions he has undertaken himself. In the clip, Trump emphasized that negotiation should always be exhausted before military action but warned that Iran “cannot have nuclear weapons” and that the military option might have to be used.
