As the relationship between President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua continues to deteriorate, Githunguri Member of Parliament (MP) Gathoni Wamuchomba now claims that the rift started before the 2022 General election.
Wamuchomba while speaking in an interview on Citizen TV on Monday September 23 said that some very powerful people who didn’t like DP Gachagua before he was chosen as Ruto’s running mate are behind the current tribulations between the President and his deputy.
The Githunguri lawmaker said that the people, who she labelled as “Mt. Kenya mafias,” disliked DP Gachagua from the onset, allegedly because they were afraid that the second in command would come in between their deals.
According to Wamuchomba, the said “mafias” hold strategic government positions in the country and are so powerful that they decide who does business or not.
“I want to be honest with you, the people who did not want Rigathi Gachagua are the people who thought that Rigathi Gachagua would block them from doing the dirty deals that they are doing today.
They are the people who claim they own UDA. They are the people who thought that no one can be elected without their nod,” Wamuchomba claimed.
She added, “They are the people who think that all deals that are done including this Adani thing, they must rubberstamp, they are people who think they own this country.”
Wamuchomba, a vocal legislator, while maintaining that the powerful people hail from the Mt. Kenya region claimed that the said “mafias” have periphery support from people close to President Ruto.
She added that the so called “mafias” are involved in corruption cases, don’t obey court orders, and that they drive vehicles that have no number plates.
Wamuchomba Exposes “Mt Kenya Mafias”
According to Wamuchomba, the unnamed individuals have in the past tapped phones belonging to some politicians in a bid to track their communications.
“These people are the Mt. Kenya mafia in business. Do you remember the Mt. Kenya mafias during Kibaki’s regime? They are people who are holding very strategic offices in this country, and they can decide if today you will do business or not,” Wamuchomba added.
“They have the audacity even to tap our phones, record and register all the conversations that we are having, against what the President said in Kasarani.”

The lawmaker however issued a warning to the so called “mafias”, saying that politics of betrayal will not be accepted in the country.
Wamuchomba’s sentiments come at a time when tension within the Kenya Kwanza administration has been growing as political infighting threatens to undermine the government’s unity.
DP Gachagua on Sunday warned President Ruto, urging him to avoid reviving the politics of betrayal that have historically sparked acrimony in the country.
Gachagua warns Ruto
Speaking at a church service in Thika Town, Gachagua voiced concerns about a purported plot to oust him from office, asserting that any form of betrayal would not sit well with the people of the Mt. Kenya region.

Accompanied by his political allies, including Wamuchomba and ousted United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party Secretary General Cleophas Malala, the DP cautioned against a repeat of the betrayal that defined the 2022 elections.
He reminded President Ruto that his election victory was largely due to Mt. Kenya’s rejection of former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s perceived betrayal when he backed Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga instead of his then-deputy Ruto.
“Let us not reintroduce the politics of betrayal,” Gachagua stated. “Ruto is a beneficiary of Mt. Kenya’s disdain for betrayal. Our people hate it and are unforgiving.”
