Ian Kagame, the son of Rwandan President Paul Kagame, has emerged as one of the most closely watched figures in Rwanda’s next generation of leaders, building a military career that took him from the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom to the ranks of the Rwanda Defence Force.
Early Life and Education
Ian Kagame was born on February 18, 1996, to Paul Kagame, the President of Rwanda, and Jeannette Kagame, Rwanda’s First Lady. He grew up during a transformative period in Rwanda’s history as the country rebuilt itself following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Ian Kagame attended Green Hills Academy in Kigali before moving to the United States, where he studied at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts.
Ian later enrolled at Williams College in Massachusetts, one of America’s top liberal arts institutions. Beyond academics, he distinguished himself in sports, competing in track and field and playing football.
He earned recognition for his athletic abilities, particularly in the high jump, and took on leadership roles, serving as captain of both the track and field and soccer teams during his college years.
